Complete Recordings 1941-1947 songs Proper (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Complete Recordings 1941-1947 album for sale These 38 tracks chronicle Peggy Lee's first recordings of her long and productive career, and chart her musical evolution, from rather timid, run-of-the-mill band singer to sophisticated and confident performer. Her first records, like "Elmer's Tune," reveal a pretty voice, but with little trace of the character and charisma that was to surface in later sessions. Complete Recordings 1941-1947 CD music is a 2-disc set with 38 songs. ...See Full Description

Norah Jones Feels Like Home CD (2004) Top Seller
Complete Recordings 1941-1947 album for sale This is an Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser.
After the unexpected runaway success of COME AWAY WITH ME, where to next? The good news about Norah Jones's sophomore effort is that she and producer Arif Mardin decided to leave well enough alone in most regards. There are no screeching guitars, thumping drum machines, or padding synthesizers, and most of the tempos are slow or laid-back--way back. Guests Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of the Band contribute to "What Am I to You?" and Dolly Parton makes an appearance on bassist Lee Alexander's "Creepin' In." Jones's backing group, the Handsome Band, provides just the right stripped-down accompaniments and subtle touches to support the blessing that is her voice.
Jones knows how to luxuriate in the sumptuousness of her sound and infuse such unlikely lyrics as "my toes just touched the water" with a sensual blues sensibility. On top of all this, when it comes to phrasing, her tremendous instincts and smarts put her in rare company. What Jones does explore further is the art of songwriting, and the results here give every indication that she is on the right track.
'Feels Like Home' features 13 tracks & a host of special guests including Dolly Parton, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson of the Band, Jesse Harris, Robert Burger and Tony Scherr. Blue Note. 2004.
Personnel: Norah Jones (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano); Dolly Parton (vocals); Kevin Breit (guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo); Jesse Harris (acoustic guitar); Tony Scherr (electric guitar); Lee Alexander (lap steel guitar, double bass, bass guitar); David Gold (viola); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Daru Oda (flute, background vocals); Garth Hudson (accordion, Hammond b-3 organ); Rob Burger (field organ); Levon Helm, Andrew ...

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were initially inspired by the Everly Brothers and under the name Tom And Jerry enjoyed a hit with 'Hey Schoolgirl'. The duo reunited in 1964 for Wednesday Morning 3AM, which included an acoustic reading of 'The Sound Of Silence'. Producer Tom Wilson made the presumptuous but prescient decision to overdub 'Sound Of Silence' with electric instrumentation and an album titled after the million-selling single was rush-released early in 1966. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme had a varied mood from the grandly serious 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her' to the bouncy '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. The duo contributed Mrs. Robinson to the soundtrack of the 1968 film, The Graduate. That same year saw the release of Bookends, a superbly-crafted work. In 1969 the duo released the celebrated Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the work's title track became a standard with its lush, orchestral arrangement and contrasting tempo. While at the peak of their commercial success, the duo became irascible and their partnership abruptly ceased. Since then there have been sporadic reunions, most notably The Concert In Central Park.

Andrews Sisters 50th Anniversary Collection CD (1990)
Complete Recordings 1941-1947 CD music The first of a very good two-volume collection of some of the Andrews Sisters' best work, this 16-song CD was more than essential at the time of its release, mostly due to the presence of several numbers that hadn't been heard in decades: "Pagan Love Song," "Shoo Shoo Baby," "Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four," "Gimme Some Skin My Friend," their rendition of "Tuxedo Junction," and their Danny Kaye and Al Jolson collaborations, "Civilization" and "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans." Apart from the Jolson number, which was in release in 1956, none of the others had been available since the 1940s, and all were worth hearing. Among the previously "lost" tracks, "Pagan Love Song" as a boogie-woogie style number is worth the price of the disc by itself, and "Tuxedo Junction" isn't far behind, Patty Andrews luxuriating in the lead while her sisters wrap their voices around hers like a second skin and Vic Schoen's arrangement provides playful accompaniment by the trumpets and saxes. "Gimme Some Skin My Friend" and "Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four" are unique Andrews Sisters creations, authored by Don Raye (of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" fame) and nearly as successful in their use of early-'40s slang. "Corns for My Country" is a delightful period song about the Hollywood Canteen (from the movie of the same title) that shows off Patty Andrews' comical mugging for the microphone. Danny Kaye makes a better lead singer than one would expect, and not just in a comic vein, and Al Jolson sounds infinitely better than one would expect on a song cut in the year of his death. The notes are also a treat, featuring reminiscences by Patty Andrews and Maxene Andrews and arranger Vic Schoen. The only drawback to this collection is that it was done in 1987, and there are now better mastering techniques and technology available. Those just discovering the trio's work, however, should also be warned that this disc doesn't stand by itself -- there are any number of key songs that only made it onto the second volume, and there are other anthologies that embrace still other parts of their vast catalog, but this and its companion volume are a nice place to start. ~ Bruce Eder
Includes liner notes by band leader Vic Schoen.
Personnel: LaVerne Andrews, Maxene Andrews, Patty Andrews (vocals).
Audio Remasterer: Doug Schwartz.
Recording information: Sound Tek Studios, NY.
Unknown Contributor Roles: Dale Sizer; Al Jolson; Vic Schoen; Danny Kaye.

Best of Miss Peggy Lee CD (1998)
Complete Recordings 1941-1947 buy CD music THE BEST OF MISS PEGGY LEE is a companion disc to the 4-CD box set MISS PEGGY LEE.
Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg (Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California).
This release includes a bonus DVD entitled FEVER: THE MUSIC OF PEGGY LEE.
Culled from the Grammy-winning deluxe box set MISS PEGGY LEE, this re-mastered collection is perhaps the most compact overview of Peggy Lee's early and late Capitol periods. Her late-'40s hits, done in collaboration with guitarist/husband Dave Barbour, have never sounded better, and include here essential Peggy Lee originals like the sly "I Don't Know Enough About You," "It's a Good Day," and the politically incorrect (even for the time) "Manana." Since Lee spent the first half of the '50s at Decca, her return to Capitol in 1957 unveiled a seasoned pro in a completely different (improved) recording environment. These are the years of "Fever" and "Alright, Okay, You Win." It's interesting that as the singer commanded more deluxe studio treatment, she and her producers opted for a "big beat" R&B feeling. Nevertheless, Peggy Lee's musical instincts never hurt her commercially as her 1969 swan song, the Lieber-and-Stoller-produced "Is That All There Is?," proved all too well.
Best of compilation featuring hit songs 'Fever', 'Big Spender', 'Pass Me By' and many more.
Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals); The Brazilians (background vocals).
Audio Remixer: Bob Norberg.
Liner Note Author: Jim Pierson.
Recording information: 07/30/1945-01/29/1969.

Black Coffee CD (1956)
Complete Recordings 1941-1947 songs All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Peggy Lee's BLACK COFFEE is a consummate jazz vocal album. Here, Lee's singing generates many emotions at once. For example, few vocalists can convey such vulnerability and strength at the same time. However, Lee's approach never comes across as forced or strained. And it is certainly not complex; her tone resounds with purity and cool passion with every phrase. The musical accompaniment is also outstanding. The elegant piano stylings of Jimmy Rowles, or, alternately, Lou Levy bring great refinement to the proceedings. In contrast, the bluesy musings of trumpeter Pete Candoli infuse this album with a kind of raw, smoky flavor.
"A Woman Alone with the Blues" is one of the most stunning tracks on BLACK COFFEE. A languid ballad about heartache, Lee exacts the pain that loneliness and loss can bring. "You're My Thrill" is another goose-bump track. On this tune, Lee sings with all the coyness of a wooing suitor. Overall, the sheer intimacy and bubbling intensity of this record will enwrap the listener.
Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals); Bill Pitman (guitar); Stella Castellucci (harp); Pete Candoli (trumpet); Jimmy Rowles, Lou Levy (piano); Larry Bunker (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Max Wayne, Buddy Clark (double bass); Ed Shaughnessy (drums).
Liner Note Author: Will Friedwald.

Zoot Sims If I'm Lucky CD (1977)
Complete Recordings 1941-1947 album for sale Tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims recorded quite a few albums with pianist Jimmy Rowles during his Pablo years; all are recommended. Rowles assisted Sims in coming up with obscurities to interpret, and this CD reissue is highlighted by such little-performed songs as "If I'm Lucky," "Shadow Waltz," "Gypsy Sweetheart" and "I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone." The lead voices are backed ably by bassist George Mraz and drummer Mousey Alexander on this enjoyable straight-ahead date. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in October 1977. Originally released on Pablo (2310-803).
Personnel: Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Rowles (piano); George Mraz (bass); Mousey Alexander (drums).
