GREATEST HITS spans the length of Janis Joplin's recording career, and features songs recorded with each of her three bands--Big Brother & The Holding Co., the Kozmic Blues Band, and the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Producers: Paul Rothchild, Bob Shad, John Simon, Gabriel Mekler.
Reissue producer: Bob Irwin.
Originally released on Columbia (32168). Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.
Personnel: Janis Joplin (vocals, guitar).
Recording information: 12/13/1966-10/01/1970.
Photographers: Don Hunstein; Daniel Kramer; Baron Wolman; Jim Marshall ; Clark Pierson.
Arranger: Janis Joplin.
A solid, if skimpy, ten-track best-of that gathers the most important songs from Janis Joplin's solo career, as well as her stint with Big Brother & the Holding Company. The compilation 18 Essential Songs offers a wider selection, but does not include the original version of "Me and Bobby McGee," which makes Greatest Hits the better purchase for those who only want one Janis Joplin disc, even if it isn't definitive. ~ Steve Huey
Drawing inspiration from Bessie Smith and Odetta, Joplin developed a brash, uncompromising vocal style quite unlike accustomed folk madonnas. In 1966 Janis was invited to the Bay Area to front Big Brother And The Holding Company. Their CHEAP THRILLS, a joyous celebration of true psychedelic soul, contained two Joplin 'standards', "Piece Of My Heart" and "Ball And Chain", but she left the group in November 1968. Electric Flag members Mike Bloomfield, Harvey Brooks and Nick Gravenites helped assemble a new act, known as the Kozmic Blues Band. I Got Dem Ol' KOZMIC BLUES Again Mama was coolly received, but the set contained several excellent Joplin vocals, notably "Try," "Maybe" and "Little Girl Blue". The singer subsequently dissolved the band and undertook medical advice for drink/drug abuse. A slimmed-down group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, was unveiled in May 1970 featuring a tighter, more intimate sound. Sessions for a debut album were all but complete when, on 4 October 1970, Joplin died of a heroin overdose at her Hollywood hotel. The posthumous PEARL proved her most consistent work, with "My Baby," "Cry Baby" and the anthemic "Get It While You Can." The highlight was the chart-topping "Me And Bobby McGee", which allowed Joplin to be both vulnerable and assertive. Janis knew few boundaries, artistic or personal, and her sadly brief catalogue is marked by bare-nerved honesty.
The 1999 CD reissue adds two bonus tracks, "Maybe" and "Mercedes Benz." ~ Steve Huey

Rolling Stone (8/16/73, p.50) - "...Janis Joplin's GREATEST HITS is no final testament to an artist, nor is it a document of its period. It is a record for people who can't get her out of their minds, and for whom she has become some sort of ghost, a permanent image of rock's capacity for generating self-destruction....Janis Joplin, Superstar..."
Q (1/95, p.273) - 3 Stars - Good - "...It's not so much the timbre of her voice that stands out...but the sheer cathartic vitality that emanates from within. It's a soul-deep, blues act that was emphatically matched by her backing bands..."

5 stars Great Place To Start Your Janis Collection
Features all of her most popular songs. The best thing is that once you hear these songs you'll very likely want her entire collection, which unfortunately isn't that large. Then once you get everything, you can give this to someone else and get them hooked on the amazing Janis.

5 stars The flower power generation woman since Joe Cocker!
This digitally remastered greatest hits CD which includes two bonus tracks on here by Janis Joplin is an excellent collection. With the destinctive sound of her grasspy high toned soulful, bluesy voice in the history of rock & roll and also popular music back then. She defined a influential following on legendary female folk singers of the early late sixties like Canadian Joni Mitchell to country folkie ballader Joan Baez. There are four favorite songs that I like on here and they are "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Me And Bobby McGee" to "Mercedes Benz".

On his second album for the Concord Jazz label, guitarist Robben Ford stays pretty much to the formula of Blue Moon from 2001. He concentrates on playing, singing, and covering great songs (and even writes a few) with interesting arrangements, inspired solos, and crisp, clean production that lets the song shine through the players. Much has been made of Ford's eclecticism and that is reflected in his choice of material here, though he never strays from the blues or R&B into jazz or fusion. Ford's selection of session players reflects his divergent interests as well: Edgar Winter appears on saxophone, while John Mayall and Ivan Neville guest along with horn bosses Bob Malach and Dan Fornero and Ford's road band. Opening the set with the title track, written by soul man Jackie Edwards, Ford lays out his formula immediately: a tight horn chart for tenor and baritone saxes, as well as trumpet; a crystal clear, expressive vocal delivery; and Ford's signature stinging guitar in the solo break lifts proceedings off on the up tip. The funky read of the Al Perkins/Otis Rush jam "Homework" features some blistering yet ...

Born Terius Nash, the Atlanta singer-songwriter known as the Dream had already written a handful of smash hits (Rihanna's "Umbrella" and J. Holiday's "Bed," among others) before he blew up with a single of his own, "Shawty is Da Sh*t (10)." On his debut album LOVEHATE, the Dream mixes a contemporary R&B sensibility with 1980s nostalgia. The throwback production on "Fast Car," "Purple Kisses," and "Luv Songs" is evocative of '80s icons such as Prince, Cameo, and Rick James at their best. LOVEHATE features guest appearances from Fabolous and Rihanna.
When Terius "The-Dream" Nash released his first album, during the third-to-last week of 2007, the Top 30 of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart contained five songs he co-wrote, only one of which was credited to him as a performer. Four of these singles -- Mary J. Blige's "Just Fine," J. Holiday's "Suffocate" and "Bed," and his own "Shawty Is da Sh*!" -- were on their way to the Top Five. Six months earlier, another song involving his input, Rihanna's "Umbrella," hit number one on the Hot 100. For Love/Hate's duration, Nash sticks with close associates Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Carlos "L.O.S." McKinney. Not only does it lend the album a unified sound unlike most modern R&B albums, but it has the effect of a suite, with common elements shared between tracks; some of the transitions would make any album sequencing assistant deeply envious. When it comes to the songs he keeps to himself, the persona maintained is closer to the one within "Bed." He is a lecherous braggart, albeit one with a slightly chirpy voice who is ultimately a charmingly vulnerable romantic, which brilliantly offsets the chumpishness. Hubris peaks in "Falsetto," where Nash not only has the nerve to work up an impression of a conquest hitting the high notes, but makes it the hook of the song -- and yet, it comes off as the harmless kid brother of Ginuwine's "Pony." There's the gently ...
