Instrumental score written by Rachel Portman. Producers: Walter Afanasieff. Engineers: Dick Lewzey, Dana Jon Chappelle. Principally recorded at CTS Studios, Wembley, England. Includes liner notes by Norman Jewison. Composer: Rachel Portman. Personnel: Michael Bolton (vocals, background vocals); Dann Huff (guitar); Chris Green (violin); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, synthesizer, drums); Gary Cirimelli (programming). Audio Mixer: Mick Guzauski. Recording information: CTS Studios, London, England; Wallyworld Music. Editor: Bill Abbott. Arrangers: Michael Bolton; Claudio Vena; Walter Afanasieff. The absurdly romantic Only You remains the watershed score of Rachel Portman's career -- its melodramatic melodies and overwrought arrangements have subsequently resurfaced at weddings, beauty pageants, and anywhere else where housewives might sob uncontrollably, effectively functioning as a musical Pavlovian trigger for the crocodile tears to commence. It seems likely Portman composed this music in her teenage diary, dotting the "i"'s in titles like "Faith" and "I'm Coming with You" with tiny hearts -- Only You possesses the kind of starry-eyed innocence and rapturous emotion exclusive to hopeless romantics, and cynical listeners may slip into sugar shock within three or four notes. Only about 20 minutes of Portman's original score appears on Sony's official soundtrack release; classical Italian music fleshes out the remainder of the disc, which concludes with Michael Bolton's histrionic "Once in a Lifetime." $13.25 Composer/Lyricist: Noël Coward. Audio Remasterer: Robin Cherry. This unlicensed album presents a 1958 studio cast recording of Noël Coward's 1929 operetta Bitter Sweet that has been out of print for many years, after having been released in the U.K. by RCA Victor/EMI and, in the U.S. in 1960, on Angel. It went out of copyright in Europe as of January 1, 2009, and Sepia Records didn't waste much time getting this version out. But the new label did take the time to add a bunch of extra tracks that more than double the running time. The 1958 album (tracks 1-11) was notable for being the first album-length version of the score, and it is excellent, with Vanessa Lee putting her soprano in the service of the starring role of a woman who follows her heart in 19th century Vienna and, along the way, sings such Coward standards as "I'll See You Again" and "Zigeuner." Also impressive is Julie Dawn as the nightclub singer Manon, handling another ...
