| | Ottmar Liebert Nouveau Flamenco CD (1990)
Opium music CDs
$11.39 NOUVEAU FLAMENCO, Ottmar Liebert's debut album, was a tremendous success upon its release in 1990; it went platinum, and paved the way for Liebert's popularity in both the New Age and mainstream markets. On the tenth anniversary of the album, Higher Octave Records re-mixed, re-mastered, and re-released NOUVEAU FLAMENCO, adding five previously unreleased tracks. Higher Octave's re-release testifies to the strength of the album's original vision, and establishes its legacy for the years to come.
To his talents as a traditional flamenco guitarist Liebert adds touches of world music (light, Latin beats characterize much of the album), jazzy flourishes, and a sense of pop accessibility. As an ...

| | Ottmar Liebert Poets & Angels CD (1991)
Opium album
$11.35 Ottmar Liebert, an established flamenco guitarist, comes forth here with shining brilliance, presenting a charming collection of 15 songs worthy for a listen during a peaceful Christmas holiday. The songs, glistening with textures of smooth Latin rhythms, are played remarkably well and hold up find as instrumentals. The CD begins with "Deck the Halls," a bright and percussive piece of festive magic. The second track, "Gloria," seems to take the listener to a higher and more positive place, keeping the world at peace at the end of a long workday. The listener will notice he or she is being pulled in by the gripping percussive Latin rhythms as the CD ages in length. The title track, is an creatively arranged and delightfully orchestrated piece that flows with both musical dexterity and melodic color. And if one imagines this collection is percussive enough, you ain't seen nothing yet. The collection moves along with great fluidity, capturing ones heart yet again with a compelling rendition of "Little Drummer Boy." At this point, the record begins to share its breathtaking improvisational flair with a solo exchange ...

| | Sun Ra Jazz In Silhouette CD (1958)
Opium music CDs
$13.85 A fascinating recording of Sun Ra and his Arkestra in an early incarnation, 1958's JAZZ IN SILHOUETTE features Ra's complex, adventurous compositions in traditional bop and swing contexts. The opening "Enlightenment" has edgy piano accompaniment from Ra, and a Cuban rhythm outro, but its breezy melody is reminiscent of Duke Ellington circa his Okeh period. "Blues at Midnight" is an up-tempo bop number with outstanding solos from all members of the Arkestra.
Complex themes ("Saturn") and fractured blues ("Horoscope") show qualities integral to the style Ra would develop in the following years. In particular, the drawn-out ensemble explorations of "Ancient Aiethopia"--which are infused with tribal percussion, flute, and chant-like themes--serve as a blueprint for the artist's signature sound. This album is an excellent, accessible introduction to the music of Sun Ra, ideal for those who may be intimidated by Ra's more challenging later ...

Opium songs
$12.69 Hosing down the cosmos with Casio keyboard driven sexual fury, HUG spouts psychedelic, lo-fi, post-punk musick for the degenerate population of Austin, Texas. Having survived for over 10 years, HUG has regularly soiled a diverse selection of Austin nightclubs during that time including: Bates Motel, Electric Lounge, Ego's, Emo's, Hole in the Wall, Stubb's, Red Eyed Fly, Ruta Maya and Room 710 to name a few.During the early to mid 80's guitarist Jack Hug played bass in the Washington DC, post-punk group NO TREND, who appeared on Touch and Go Records and Lydia Lunch's Widowspeak label. He's also known as "Gentle Jack" a man whose soothing phone voice can prompt even the most stubborn bowels to move with alacrity. Casioist Scott Van Hug, who, out of the three band members most closely resembles a small, shopworn black girl, achieved fame and fortune as "Nova" in Rick Linklater's SLACKER. He also managed Austin band ED HALL during the 80's and did the artwork for their first two albums. Go ahead, ask him about his sex organs some time. Vocalist Blair Hug spent most of the 80's perfecting devices and ...
