Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Recorded at Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington. "Grind" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Again" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Personnel: Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (bass guitar); Sean Kinney (drums). Audio Mixer: Toby Wright. Recording information: Bad Animals, Seattle, WA. Photographer: Rocky Schenck. Dispelling rumors of their demise due to Layne Staley's heroin addiction, Alice in Chains is a sonically detailed effort that ranks as their best-produced record, and its best moments are easily some of their most mature music. Alice in Chains relies less on metallic riffs and more on melody and texturally varied arrangements than the group's previous full-length albums, finally integrating some of the more delicate acoustic moods of their EPs. The lyrics deal with familiar AIC subject matter -- despair, misery, loneliness, and disappointment -- but in a more understated fashion, and the lyrics take on more uplifting qualities of toughness and endurance, which were missing from much of their previous work. The consistent visceral impact Alice in Chains lacks in comparison to that previous work is partially made up for by the skilled production and songs like "Grind," "Brush Away," "Over Now," and the hit ballad "Heaven Beside You," which are among the band's best work. Still, in spite of its many virtues, it's hard not to feel a little frustrated with the record, as though, given those qualities, it should have turned out better than it did -- there are some slow spots where the songs are undercrafted and not especially memorable, and those moments can make the band sound uncommitted and distracted. That, in turn, can make the defiance of songs like "Grind" ("you'd be well advised/not to plan my funeral 'fore the body dies") sound more like denial; just when Alice in Chains' music was finally beginning to emerge from the dark side, the intra-band problems became too much to bear and made Alice in Chains the last collection of new material the band would ever release. ~ Steve Huey Much like the overcast and murky weather that Seattle is known for, Alice In Chains' music is dour, plumbing the darker side of life that's cluttered with dashed hopes and inner turmoil. The group's self-titled third album continues along this path, peppered by Layne Staley's nihilistic lyrics and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's weighty playing. The three-legged dog on the cover guarantees that no warm and fuzzy feelings will get aroused. When Staley states "How proud are you being able/To gather faith from fable?" on "God Am," he reflects the feelings of the displaced generation AIC sing to. Elsewhere, imagery of drug addiction floats through "Sludge Factory," as Cantrell's plodding riffs and the sound of a disjointed conversation paint an aural picture of nodding out. The darkened hues coloring the sound of ALICE IN CHAINS make it a perfect rainy-day record.Rolling Stone (11/30/95, p.63) - 4 Stars (out of 10) - "...On the band's fourth album, the lyrics deal with drugs, danger and death--and the songs achieve a startling, staggering and palpable impact..." Q (1/96, p.17) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...another distinctive album...grinding guitars rub up against dense, late-'60s style vocal harmonies..." Musician (2/96, p.91) - "...Alice In Chain's sullen music is like stomach acid climbing up your throat. But once 'Grind' satisfies your senses in its queasy way, another listen feels all but inevitable..." Alice In Chains Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Brutal, powerful, evocative This is the first Alice In chains album I got and it is a really good album. With its sludge like pace and heavy alternative sound it is a truly incredible album that only AIC could have come up with. My faviorite songs are by far Sludge Factory, God Am, Grind, Again and Heaven Beside You. All tracks are great but those stand above the rest. Submitted by Will (Sydney) Was This Review Helpful? I remember buying this album the day it was released... I remember because it was released the day of my 17th birthday... and I had been into AIC for a long time before that.
True enough, Dirt will probably always be considered THE definitive album for AIC, but you have to keep in mind that they never made a bad album. This one is a must for any AIC fan, and I'd recommend it to anyone who truly appreciates nihilism in music. Submitted by TS (Shreveport, LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Band and Best Grunge album ever!!! I already loved Grunge before I heard this album because of bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins. And this album seeled Grunge as being my favorite genre of music. Every single song on this album is great. It's dark and muddy and really hits you when you are in a bad mood. Grind, Sludge Factory, Heaven Beside You, Again, Frogs, Over Now, well pretty much every song is great. The most Powerfull album ever. Its a shame that Layne Staley passed away and this was there last album because they were just starting to make the best of there music and could have done even better after this. Even if you don't like rock you should buy this album. It's just that Epic!!! Submitted by Clint (Aurora, NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The Best of Grunge Alice in Chains, thats all you got to say. Alice in Chains is my personal favorite out of all the bands that came out of seattle that started the grunge area in the late 90s'. Although DIRT is my favorite AIC cd this one is a very close second. The harsh riffs, Laynes' voice, the lyrics. I have a friend that said when he heard this cd he said that AIC wasn't as good as they once were ( his farvorit band is Nirvana) . I told him he was dead wrong, that this cd showed how talented AIC really was. This cd has the best lyrics out of all the cd's. Espeically Laynes lyrics on Frogs and God Am. This cd is the definition of Alice in Chains, and the one that makes them truely imortal. Submitted by Missy (Heath Springs, SC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Alice In Chains
$6.75 Alice In Chains: Layne Staley (vocals); Jerry Cantrell (guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington and Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California. When Alice in Chains' debut album, Facelift, was released in 1990, about a year before Nirvana's Nevermind, the thriving Seattle scene barely registered on the national musical radar outside of underground circles (although Soundgarden's major-label debut, Louder Than Love, was also released that year and brought them a Grammy nomination). That started to change when MTV jumped all over the video for "Man in the Box," giving the group a crucial boost and helping to pave the way for grunge's popular explosion toward ...

Alice In Chains
$6.49 Live Recording
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are ...

Between the end of 1993 and a performance for MTV Unplugged in the spring of 1996, Alice in Chains performed no concerts -- they didn't even support the release of their eponymous third album with a minor tour. There's a variety of reasons for their inactivity -- primarily it's due to the health of certain members -- but the lack of concerts made the Unplugged performance seem special. During the concert, Alice in Chains drew ...

| | Mudvayne Lost And Found CD (2005)
Alice In Chains
$8.99 Mudvayne: Chad Gray (vocals); Greg Tribbett (guitar); Ryan Martinie (bass guitar); Matt McDonough (drums). It's been three years for Mudvayne, three years when metal started to reject its "rap" and "nu" prefixes. At first, Lost and Found reflects that realignment. Vocalist Chad Gray and his mates have nixed the nicknames and makeup for their third Epic full-length, and they try to focus on songs instead of heavy music shtick. However, they equate getting real with the melodramatic plead that interrupts the razor-sharp main part of "Choices," and Gray can't overcome lines like "IMN"'s "No one/No one could ever understand/This life." The song is about suicide, which is very serious. But yelling "F*ck this sh*t!" over thudding rhythms just isn't very powerful anymore. They nail it on opener "Determined" -- one of Mudvayne's all-time strongest tracks, it's a fist-swinging blast of modernized thrash. But Lost and Found soon falls into the familiar, busting no-one-understands-me lyrics and matching moments of refreshing rawness to stretches of stereotypical "corporate metal," a non-genre that's risen up to accept loud rock refugees and the harder side of post-grunge. The energy in "Determined" and "Just" is sapped by the meandering "TV Radio" and "Fall into Sleep," and ultimately Mudvayne gets lost between thrash and diluted Slipknot devotion. ~ Johnny Loftus While some ...

| | Hoobastank Every Man For Himself CD (2006) (Import) +; Japan
Alice In Chains
$32.85 Japanese pressing includes a bonus track TBA. Island. 2006.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The third release from the post-grunge outfit Hoobastank builds on the band's previous strengths, combining a penchant for punchy hard rock with hooky accessibility. EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF kicks off with the martial edge of "Born to Lead," then gives way to the high-flown, midtempo melodicism of "Moving Forward." "Inside of You" alternates a slinky, riff-centered verse with an MTV-ready chorus, while the album's lead-off single, "If I Were You," shows Hoobastank in expansive power-ballad mode. While the band won't win any prizes for originality, Hoobastank keep a steady holding pattern on EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF, an achievement that should please fans of the band's commercially oriented heavy rock. Hoobastank once and forever banished any lingering doubts that they were a bunch of Bonnaroo hippies, à la Ekoostik Hookah, with their 2003 sophomore effort, The Reason, a strident collection of loud, angsty rockers that sounded as if it could have come out in the twilight days of post-grunge in 1997/1998. Not catchy or bratty enough to truly be pigeonholed as punk-pop and way too big and slick to be emo, they were a straight-up, hard-edged alt-rock band, only without any suggestion of being outsiders, either in their sound or intent. They were anthemic, and nowhere more so than on the power ballad title track, which became a smash in 2004, climbing all the way to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Two years after that, Hoobastank delivered Every Man for Himself, their third album and their first as bona fide rock stars, and it sure sounds like the work of a band that's now established: it's slick and stylish, big and bright, designed for arenas and as bumper music on both MTV and VH1. Bassist Markku Lappalaninen may have left the fold, but his absence is not the reason for the slight changes in their sound; he would not be the one to polish the production, to add the strings, or to add a heavy dose of Franz Ferdinand-styled disco-rock, either. These are all things that the remaining three -- vocalist Douglas Robb, guitarist Dan Estrin, and drummer Chris Hesse -- along with returning producer Howard Benson brought to the table, and the result is a record that sounds a little more colorful and a little more appropriate than its two predecessors, which tended to be slightly monotonous and dull. The proliferation of keyboards, strings, acoustic guitars, and even horns gives this some welcome sonic variety, which helps balance the plodding sincerity of the group's grinding guitars and Robb's ham-fisted lyrics ("I am not the next of them/I am the first of me"). And since Hoobastank is about the overall sound instead of the specifics of the song or performances, it is good that there is more happening on the surface, since it makes the album coherent and easier to digest. But even if Every Man for Himself was constructed with the mainstream in mind, it likely won't win any new converts. [Every Man for Himself was released with two separate covers presenting the same artwork in different colors (à la Split Enz with True Colours: there is a green variation of the front-cover fingerprint and a red variation).] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Hoobastank once and forever banished any lingering doubts that they were ...
