File under bubblegum. Big chewy, everlasting-gobstopper bubblegum, the kind whose flavor never dies. The kind that gets a gooey Michael Stipe to tell some magazine that the Banana Splits meant more to him than The Beatles. Heck, every alterna-rock band with active senses of melody and humor has spent their entire career trying to write one as good as any of the sugary pieces of pink, chewable, perfect pop craft in this brief but ace soundtrack to a nostalgic Demi Moore vehicle. These songs, by bands that are both silly (the Archies and Vanity Fare) and serious (Jackson 5 and Badfinger), are built on crescendoing melodies and chord changes so acrobatic you don't even realize their magnitude--you just remember the hook as long as you live and breathe. Inspirational.
Producers: Charlotte Caffey, Susanna Hoffs.

Now And Then Soundtrack album
$34.29 (MP3 Available for Download) A HANDFUL OF KEYS features previously unreleased live radio transcriptions originally broadcast in 1938.
Recorded live at NBC Studios and The Yacht Club, New York, New York in 1938. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
As a label, the U.K.'s Proper does a pretty decent job of assembling a great cross-section of tracks, decent sound, and fairly annotated notes (though labels names seldom if ever appear either in liner notes or in track notations, only catalog number...hmmmm) all for a really great price. Hardcore fans of most artists will either have most or all of the material in their boxes, but those curious enough to look deeper into an artist than a single- or double-disc hits package will want to investigate Proper's catalog. This set of Fats Waller material covers the years 1922 -1943, virtually his entire professional career. Each disc has its own title and runs basically chronologically, from his solo work through his many ensembles. This is a laymen's collection, and is hardly exhaustive of any period, rather merely representative. True fans will want to seek out the RCA sets which are exhaustive in their research, presentation and execution. This is a fine introductory package, but that's it. ~ Thom Jurek
A wonderfully selected chronological taste of Fats Waller from his first piano solo up through the glorious ensemble swing of 1935. Many recent U.S. attempts at a Waller sampler seem haphazard by comparison. Ever since the deletion of his entire Bluebird catalog, the European labels have been a great source of consolation for disgruntled admirers of this man's music. One irritating shortcoming of most American reissues has been an apparent reluctance to include more than a thimbleful of Waller's exciting material from the 1920s. Nearly half of the sides included here date from before 1930. This allows the listener to follow the growth of the young Thomas Waller and to arrive at a greater appreciation of his impact upon the world. Here is Fats cutting a hot piano solo at the age of 19, daring to play such stuff on the pipe organ a few years later, and incorporating both instruments into hot ensembles, ...

Recorded in Portland Maine, with Jim Begley of "The Studio", Jones' third CD is refreshingly genuine and musically to the point. Front and center is her remarkable vocal performance; opening with "It Is Well With My Soul," Jones sets the album's tone via a glorious 19th century hymnal that evolves from despair and grief to forgiveness and liberation. Backed by her long-time touring band, ...
