An hour-long disc filled with musical explorations and compositions that defy belief, Flying in a Blue Dream is unquestionably Joe Satriani at his absolute best. Breaking his all-instrumental tradition for the first time, he croons on six of the disc's 18 tracks, including the weird "Strange"; and the bluesy, hard-rocking "Big Bad Moon"; and the driving "Can't Slow Down." Satriani's voice isn't extraordinary, but it fits extremely well with the music he creates, especially on the acoustic-tinged, uplifting "I Believe." It's his playing that's the really impressive thing here, though; his unique tone and complex song structures are enhanced by his signature playing style and the incredible array of effects and tricks he wrestles out of his instrument. The disc closes with the high-flying, misty piece "Into the Light," leaving behind a feeling of real wonder. Soaring, powerful, and triumphant, this recording deserves a place in everyone's collection. ~ Phil Carter

I'm gonna have to say it ties with Surfing With the Alien. Seriously, this is an album that will satisfy true music lovers, even those who aren't guitar fanatics. He's got such an alien sound on so many of the songs... it's amazing. The guy's a frickin genius; an alien himself in the world of guitar playing. I play guitar (not like this guy, of course)
and man, it's hard to believe some the shizzle he can pull off. My favorite track is prolly The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, and I've been working on that weird thing that he starts to do about a minute and a half into the song. It's certainly a challenge, to say the least. But at the same time (once again this is for the guitarists out there) if you have a good physical grasp of the instrument and pick and choose riffs and solos of his to practice well, it's actually really heplful. Something you find with Satch's music in terms of guitar is that while technically demanding, it's at the same time sonically accessible and not overbearing to attempt to play (well, some of it). Great learning music, as well as just good sounds in general. As for his vocals, I like his voice. You're obviously not getting anything insane in that department, but you can't really criticize the man for it since he is, by nature, a guitarist. All of the songs are great, really worth paying money, not downloading it for you cheapskates out there. Buy it and enjoy the surf.

$8.49 Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Billy Price (vocals); Malcolm Lukens (keyboards); John Harrison (bass); Byrd Foster (drums). Recorded at Town Hall, New York, New York on November 27, 1974. Digitally remastered by Dennis M. Drake. Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Billy Price Keystone Rhythm Band, John Harrison, Bill Price (vocals); Malcolm Lukens (keyboards); Byrd Foster (drums). By the time this long-player hit the street, Roy Buchanan (guitar/vocals) had already departed from his oft-acrimonious relationship with Polydor Records. To their credit, the label issued Live Stock (1975), which captured the artist in performance at Town Hall in New York City on November 27, 1974. This disc features the recently corralled combo of Bill Price (vocals), John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). Interestingly, the instrumentalists would reconvene behind Buchanan for his next two studio albums, A Street Called ...
