(16 Customer Reviews)
The one and only Satriani-taught and Zappa-tested virtuoso, Steve Vai, returns with his self-produced 1990 release, PASSION AND WARFARE. The album was inspired by sequential dream patterns Vai experienced earlier in his life, and results in one technically electrifying ride filled with vivid mysticism and groovy instrumental imagery. The album was recorded in his home studio, the Mothership, and released on Relativity/Epic Records. Vai says it best when he characterizes this album as "Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc."

Steve Vai Passion & Warfare Songs Passion & Warfare Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of the Best This is definitely one of Vai's best albums. From start to finish, every song with the exception of one track “The Riddle” is amazing. On that track at the end they start reciting lines from the Pledge of Allegiance over and over again. It does not fit with the song, and gets really old really quick. Other than that one song, I would highly recommend this CD to any rock fan or aspiring guitarist. Best Instrumental Guitar Album EVER Although I prefer his tutor Satriani's melodies and writing a little more considering a total body of work, this album as a whole is the best collection of rock guitar work EVER. Vai is the king of the fretboard and NO ONE can touch him. As a long time guitarist, I have heard and studied thousands of players and this guy takes the cake. By quite a margain too. Mind blowing first and every time The first time I heard this album was with my friend/bass player Karl while cruising down SW Military, a popular crusing strip in San Antonio. 99.5 KISS debuted the album, playing it in it's entirety. We just so happened to both be on acid that night. You gotta love L S D and good timing. We parked the car and were completely lost in the album. Song after song kicked a$$. Not just guitar wizardy a$$ either. Just because they were good SONGS. We had to get the tape. Maybe it was just the acid? It wasn't the acid (but it made for one HE LL of an experience). I haven't stopped listening to it since. He had some good songs on his other albums, but this is the only one that kicks a$$ from start to finish. Buy this cd, and some acid if ya can too! | | Living Sacrifice Hammering Process CD (2000)
Passion & Warfare
$13.49 The dissonant, trebly guitar noodling combined with detuned sub-riffing known as nu-metal sneaks into the always-evolving aggro of Living Sacrifice on the group's sixth release, The Hammering Process. Though perhaps considered a suspicious shift by their underground metal fans, this subtle transformation works for a unit used to combining the best elements of metal's many forms into new and original concoctions. In a dramatic overhaul of their lineup, founding members Bruce Fitzhugh (vocals, guitar) and Lance Garvin (drums) ...
| | Dream Theater Falling Into Infinity CD (1997)
Passion & Warfare
$8.39 Dream Theater's specialty is atmospheric metal, at times heavy, at times sinister, with a sharp techno edge. "New Millennium," the disc's opening cut, defines the sound: ringing guitars, a driving beat, start-stop dynamics and rolling drum crescendos. There's a bit of a Rush influence at work here, as well as ELP and even some Metallica. "Hollow Years" is a quieter track, replete with gentle acoustic guitar, soothing vocals ...
| | Dream Theater Scenes From A Memory CD (1999)
Passion & Warfare
$11.35 "Metropolis Part I," a track featured on Dream Theater's breakthrough, IMAGES AND WORDS, left many progressive rock enthusiasts with what seemed like another unfinished chapter in a story never to be completed. Seven years and five albums later, Dream Theater returned to its majestic beginnings with METROPOLIS PART II--SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Keyboard virtuoso Jordan Rudess, who was a logical replacement for Derek Sherinian, revitalized the band's sound. Rudess's collaboration with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy stole the attention of Dream Theater fans in the instrumental project, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT.
METROPOLIS PART II is an epic concept ...
| | Dream Theater Awake CD (1994)
Passion & Warfare
$9.39 Dream Theater's web of metal and progressive elements comes roaring out of the speakers at full throttle like some manic coupling of Frank Zappa, Guns & Roses and Yes, a garish torrent of virtuoso chopsmanship, classical flourishes and good old fashioned nosebleed metal.
With his snaking, syncopated lines, complicated rhythmic variations and crunching tone, Dream Theater's John Petrucci is a guitar hero for the '90s, and string slingers who admire the likes of Alan Holdsworth and Steve Vai will find much to admire in his unhinged extended flights on "Voices" and "Erotomania." And singer James LaBrie possesses the kind of classic tenor pipes that distinguish singers like Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Geddy Lee and Axl Rose from the rest of the pack: the kind of powerhouse squawk that can push through the guitars and keyboards--hey, you can hear him in Antarctica.
The ...
| | Joe Satriani Extremist CD (1992)
Passion & Warfare
$7.59 Over the course of his last several albums, the legendary guitarist Joe Satriani has established himself as the poet laureate of heavy metal guitarists, a canny stylist with a rare gift for eliciting lyrical nuances from a wall of distortion and feedback. With the support of a skin tight funk-metal ensemble, Satriani unleashes his fiery range of moods, although on a ballad like "Cryin'" his orchestrations are poignantly tasteful. Balancing blazing hellbent phrasing with carefully wrought arrangements, THE EXTREMIST charts bold new directions for instrumental rock.
