Personnel: Devin Townsend, T.M. Stevens (vocals); Terry Bozzio (drums, percussion); Martin Schwartz, Jerome, John Sombrotto, Kane Roberts, Ahmet Zappa, Liz Sroka, Tracy Turner (background vocals). Illustrators: Peter Michelena; Jack Martin. Photographers: Robert Knight ; Kimio Takeyama; Larry DiMarzio. Arranger: Steve Vai. After the success of PASSION & WARFARE, Steve Vai fed his creative hunger by collaborating with a lineup of exceptional musicians. Released on Relativity/Epic Records, SEX & RELIGION features master drummer Terry Bozzio, Shocka Zooloo bassist T.M. Stevens, and early vocal efforts from Strapping Young Lad's Devin Townsend. Bozzio and Stevens provide an impressive rhythmic foundation with Townsend's charismatic banshee-like dynamics complementing Vai's brilliant melodic contour. Despite creative differences during its creation that resulted in a short life for the all-star super group, SEX & RELIGION still offers entertaining songs about the human soul's desire for love and contentment in the face of despair. Steve Vai formed a new straight-ahead heavy metal combo for the follow-up to his instrumental masterpiece, Passion and Warfare. In this context, the imaginative guitarist is saddled down by a pedestrian band and an overwrought vocalist, which limits Vai's ability to stretch out. Consequently, the record is the most predictable and conventional -- not to mention boring -- of Vai's usually remarkable career. ~ Stephen Thomas ErlewineMusician (8/93, p.54) - "...the guitarist does indeed seem capable of summoning light without heat...a churning, propulsive, unpredictable kind of highbrow hardcore, with a crafty pop overlay and a liquid-cherry center of post-adolescent angst and rebellion...[vocalist Devon Townsend] makes Axl Rose sound like Johnny Mathis... Audio Magazine (11/93, p.105) - "...Vai's legendary axe dexterity is kept more within song contexts than expected, though `accessibility' doesn't diminish the soloing or intellect...." | Sex & Religion Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) The band experience of Steve Vai Amazing. Right after the critically acclaimed Passion And Warfare record, Steve turned towards the concept of a band. (Originally LWH - Light Without Heat). Sex And Religion is the ultimate record: Vai commands the whole thing, T.M. Stevens provides uberbass, Terry Bozzio... well... the AMAZING Terry shows us something incredible, and Devin Townsend makes a perfect appearance. He is the core of this heavy sounding brilliance. And Steve's guitar work is beyond perfect (is that possible?). Check out the last track, Rescue Me Or Bury Me, and you'll see. Submitted by vintagebreed (London, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
All-Star Line-up No doubt that Steve Vai can sand on his own. Now with his all-star line-up, things have become much more interesting. You see the world through more than one set of eyes.
The musicianship is great. Terry is a phenom on the drums. Good hooks. If you like Vai, this is a pleasant and different addition to the collection. Submitted by a reviewer (Palm Beach, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sex & Religion
$191.79 Year after year, more recordings are released into the public domain in Europe, where copyrights extend only 50 years, and as they do, budget reissue labels like Prism Leisure take advantage of that law to press up collections of tracks that were formerly in the possession of major labels. In the present instance, Rosemary Clooney's Columbia Records recordings of the early '50s are repackaged on the 2003 release Come On-A My House, such that Prism is able to include tracks recorded up to 1952, but no further. Thus, the early Clooney hits "Beautiful Brown Eyes," "Come On-A My House," "Mixed Emotions," "I'm Waiting Just for You," "I Wish I Wuz," "Tenderly," "Half as Much," "Botch-a-Me (Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina)," "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" (a duet with Marlene Dietrich), "Blues in the Night," and "You'll Never Know" are included, following her discography up to the end of 1952. But Prism will have to wait until 2005 for hits like "Hey There" and "This Ole House," which came along in 1954. Meanwhile, the collection is typically generous in terms of time (hey, when you're not paying for anything, why not?) and typically scattered in terms of organization. The tracks are thrown on in any old order, having been mastered from old records that reveal occasional signs of wear and tear in the form of hiss and clicks. The liner notes are generic, and there are no other annotations beyond the requisite song titles and songwriting credits. This isn't a good way to appreciate Clooney's recorded legacy, but it is a cheap way. ~ William Ruhlmann The first of three Bear Family sets of Clooney's complete recordings is uneven stylistically, although a big percentage of it is first-rate. The problem is that Clooney's career from 1947-54 at Columbia Records was divided between sultry, jazz-based big band and popular music, and light novelty tunes of the kind that drove Sinatra away from the label. A big part of this set is built principally around those novelty songs, which Clooney was forced to record. Additionally, due to its chronological sequencing, it opens up with the most dubious of Clooney's novelty numbers, the Tony Pastor & The Clooney Sisters (Rosemary and Betty) pre-Columbia recordings. Pastor was more of a novelty performer than a serious vocalist, so their recordings together, which comprise most of the first disc, are something of an acquired taste. Those songs are followed by her introduction to Columbia Records; there are some hauntingly beautiful numbers interspersed between too many novelty tunes (with Pastor playing too large a part in much of it). Disc Two closes out the Clooney Sisters' career and the Tony Pastor sides -- even the lesser of these numbers is worthwhile, as they display ...

$39.49 Japanese edition of the 1999 & third volume of Queen's best with a bonus track not on the U.S. edition, 'I Was Born To Love You'. 17 tracks total. NOTE - the Japanese edition does not contain the U.S. edition's 'Thank God It's Christmas'.
Queen: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon. Additional personnel includes: David Bowie, George Michael, Elton John, Wyclef Jean, Ras Michael, Free, Montserrat Caballe (vocals). Producers include: Queen, David Bowie, David Richards, Mike Moran, Mack. Additional personnel includes: George Michael, David Bowie, Montserrat Caballe, Elton John. Pay attention, because this gets tricky. Very tricky. The first Queen Greatest Hits released in America was a 14-track LP that hit the stores in 1981. Several years later, CDs overtook LPs as the leading format of recorded music, but due to various legal reasons, Queen's catalog didn't hit CD until 1991, and soon, CD compilations started to appear in bewildering configurations. In the U.K., where Queen remained on the charts throughout the '80s, a sequel to that 1981 Greatest Hits was released in 1991, chronicling such hits as "Under Pressure," "I Want to Break Free," and "Radio Ga Ga." In the U.S., Queen stopped having Top 40 hits after "Radio Ga Ga," so Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 was filled with music largely unfamiliar to the American listener. Hollywood, the American label with the rights to the reissues, thus decided to slightly reconfigure that U.K. Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 by dropping a few tracks and substituting such radio staples as "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Stone Cold Crazy," along with the hits "Under Pressure" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was a current hit in 1992 thanks to its exposure in the hit film Wayne's World. This reconfigured Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 was called Classic Queen and it was a Top Ten hit, but surely listeners expecting Queen songs a little more classic than "Headlong" and "I'm Going Slightly Mad" were disappointed that, ...
