Not all of Willie Nelson's hits are on 16 Biggest Hits -- after all, it only features recordings he made for Columbia and skips over any hit duet he's had -- but it never was intended to be a definitive compilation. Instead, it's a worthy summation of his biggest hits of the late '70s and '80s, from 1975's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" to 1989's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now." In between those two songs, plenty of classics -- "If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time," "Georgia on My Mind," "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys," "Always on My Mind," "City of New Orleans" -- are hauled out, making for an excellent listen that's ideal for novices and casual fans. Of course, Nelson's catalog is so rich it's impossible to pare it down to 16 songs, but this is certainly a terrific sampler on its own terms. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Willie Nelson spent 19 years at Columbia Records. It was during these years that Nelson reached the peak of his career, consistently topping the country charts and occasionally ascending the pop charts as well ("Always On My Mind," for one, was a #1 hit on both the country and pop charts). 16 BIGGEST HITS collects, for the first time, all of Nelson's best-known recordings from this period on a single disc. From his first #1 record, 1975's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," to his last, 1989's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now," Willie Nelson dominated this era of country music. 16 BIGGEST HITS demonstrates why. It's hard to imagine a country fan who doesn't know at least a few of these recordings by heart. The most successful of them--Nelson's composition "On The Road Again" and his covers of "Georgia On My Mind" and "Always On My Mind"--have reached that pantheon of "songs you've heard so many times you could never forget them, even if you wanted to." A great introduction to one of country's great artists, as are the other records in Columbia's 16 BIGGEST HITS series, which include anthologies of George Jones, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, and Tammy Wynette.

THE ROSE HOTEL is Texas songwriter Robert Earle Keen's first studio album since 2005's WHAT I REALLY MEAN. Keen enlisted fellow Texan Lloyd Maines to produce him this time out and that was a solid decision. The material ranges from the title track which is one of his spun out story tunes that looks at a pair of lovers who can never quite connect as they ...

"Something Worth Leaving Behind" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Lee Ann Womack scored her contemporary country music critical breakthrough with I Hope You Dance in 2000. Almost universally acclaimed, it showcased the singer's exceptionally wide range. While her platinum-selling self-titled debut made the critics take notice -- as usual in this genre, only underscoring what country music programmers, DJs, and listeners already knew -- and her sophomore issue, Some Things I Know, multiplied her fan base, I Hope You Dance was cited as a "career album," meaning that it wouldn't get much better. The pundits were wrong. Something Worth Leaving Behind cemented Womack's place in the country music pantheon by pushing her own boundaries as an artist further than ever before. Her seemingly effortless cruise through honky tonk, country-pop ballads, and searing midtempo "message" numbers serves her well on this wildly adventurous collection of songs. Stepping into the producer's chair for the first time -- along with longtime producers Mark Wright and Frank Liddell and newcomers Matt Serletic and Mike McCarthy -- Womack fills the album with some off-center, nearly alt-country cuts by Bruce Robison (the gorgeous ballad "Blame It on Me") and a pair by the now reclusive Julie Miller (the poignant "Orphan Train" and rollicking funky gospel tune "I Need You"), who also sings backup on ...
