| | Bruce Springsteen Tracks CD Bruce Springsteen Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
TRACKS includes 56 previously unreleased masters, many of which were recorded during the BORN IN THE U.S.A. and THE RIVER sessions, as well as ten B-sides.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This handsomely packaged box set goes a long way towards illuminating the darker corners of Springsteen's recording career. Apparently, almost every time the Boss went into the studio he recorded more songs than he could possibly fit onto a record, and most of those extra tracks languished in obscurity. The four-disc TRACKS aims to change that. The amazing thing about the never-before-heard material here (and the little-known b-sides also included) is that most of the songs are just as impressive as the ones ultimately chosen to go on Springsteen's albums. Spanning various phases of his career, the selections chronicle Springsteen's journey from Dylan-inspired folk-poet to funky working class hero to larger-than-life rock icon, and each era is given a new coat of paint via the previously unreleased songs that represent it. Of special note is the innovative manner in which the package itself was put together, the box folding out to reveal a four-cornered tapestry of candid Springsteen photographs that pull out to expose the four glorious discs underneath.
Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen.

Brilliant, but... At last Bruce Springsteen comes around to release a bunch of his famous outtakes. At first rumoured to be a 6-disc set, but finally cut down to 4. A lot of his arguably best songs are on this set, and there are also many songs not previously circulated on bootlegs. But some of his most famous outtakes aren't here, like The Promise and The Fever to name a couple (these were finally released on 18 Tracks). The feeling that comes to mind is "we want more". He has so many songs in the vault, and another disc or two wouldn't done any harm. The songs that made it, though, makes sure that this is a thrilling experience for any fan - and a must-have if you like Springsteen at all. Outstanding selection of songs Bruce Springsteen has always been an amazingly prolific songwriter. It is alleged that he has four times the number of songs that can be released on any disc ready to go, and that the selection process can take as much time as the recording. The only disappointment is that this release could probably be even larger, but the true mark of a great entertainer is that they leave you wanting more. All the tracks were remixed for this release, so even the 20 years old tracks recorded in low-tech studios sound great compared to modern songs recorded at The Hit Factory or other high end studios. Highlights include the early song Thundercrack, which would have fit in nicely on the E Street Shuffle. Dollhouse and Loose Ends from The River sessions are excellent. I heard Loose Ends performed in Pittsburgh on the 2000 tour, it is one of my favorites and it is incredible that a song so good could be left off an album (The River) that had 20 songs. Frankie and Man at the Top are wonderful songs from the Born in the USA sessions. Man at the Top is one of the most biographically honest songs of Bruce's catalog, with the lines "Here comes a kid with a guitar in has hand / Dreamin' of his record in the number one slot / Everybody wants to be the man at the top". Songs from the 90's that stand out are When the Lights Go Out, an uptempo rocker, and Back in Your Arms, a ballad recorded with the E Street Band during the Greatest Hits sessions and heard in snippets on the Blood Brothers video. Accompanying the four discs are an excellent liner notes book with great photos and all the lyrics. It also has some previously released B-sides which are nice to have on CD, like Janey Don't You Lose Heart, Be True, and Pink Cadillac. With 66 songs, it is like getting five new Bruce discs at once. What could be better than that? Submitted by a reviewer (Ashville, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
