Marc Anthony was a salsa superstar throughout the '90s, long before the Latin pop explosion of the 1999. Once Ricky Martin ushered in a new era of crossovers that spring with "Livin' La Vida Loca," there was a rush of crossover acts, almost enough to make it seem like Anthony was left behind. After all, his bid for mainstream success as the starring role in Paul Simon's Broadway musical The Capeman was undone as it became one of the Great White Way's most notorious failures. Still, Anthony had his own English-language album in the works. Titled Marc Anthony, the record appeared in the fall of 1999, guaranteeing it a shot at a mass audience, which is exactly what it was designed to do. As a matter of fact, it's almost a bit too calculated, opening with two interchangeable ballads that set the tone for a pleasant, subdued set of Latin-tinged adult contemporary pop. Anthony sings beautifully throughout, but he's never given the opportunity to be truly electric, the way he can be with hot salsa numbers. The liveliest the album gets is the catchy, mid-tempo single "I Need to Know," which is gently danceable, or the mild salsa of "That's Okay," and the Latin dance-pop of "She's Been Good to Me." The rest is almost all pop ballads, perfRolling Stone (11/11/99, pp.134-6) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...If the singer's constant state of apocalyptic romantic swoon is a little suspicious, the earnest lyrics and lilting arrangements render any doubts churlish....his vocals fill every corner of the rococo salsafied space..." Entertainment Weekly (10/1/99, p.74) - "...making an exceedingly smooth, beguiling transition. The converstaional phrasing and subtleness of Anthony's beats give his swirling ballads purpose and direction..." | | Billy Bragg Volume 2 CDs (2006) Bonus DVD; Remastered; Box Set
Marc Anthony
$59.09 The first four years of Billy Bragg's recording career (1982 to 1986) were a blur of record releases that established the froggy-voiced "Bard from Barking" as perhaps the most powerful and engaging political songwriter to emerge since the "folk scare" of the 1960s. From 1988 on, however, Bragg had the difficult task of living up to his own legacy, and that proved to be no small task; as he stylistically outgrew the rough electric guitar and vocal textures of Brewing Up with Billy Bragg and Life's a Riot with Spy vs. Spy, Bragg didn't display the same immediate skill at "proper" record-making and took his time growing comfortable with the craft of the studio, and while he never ran out of things to write and sing about, as the 1980s faded into the 1990s his songs lost a certain amount of the sharp wit and keen focus that was second nature on his early records. (It also became clear the material was coming a lot more slowly, to boot.) This period of Bragg's career is documented on Volume 2, the second box set compiled from Bragg's back catalog, featuring expanded versions of four albums: 1988's Workers Playtime, 1991's Don't Try This at Home, 1996's William Bloke, and 2002's England, Half English. While none of these albums can be called bad, very little of what's featured on this set matches the consistent quality of the records compiled on the similar Volume 1 box, and even the best of the records featured here (Don't Try This at Home) falls slightly short of the wit and fire of Bragg's salad days. That said, while one has to pick and choose to find the pearls on Volume 2, ...

| | Wiley Playtime Is Over CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Marc Anthony
$23.65 Lest we believe Wiley settled with Big Dada as a last resort, after leaving XL and finding some dissatisfaction with the self-released route, the producer/MC opens Playtime Is Over with "50/50," in which he declares, over and over, that he has the best record deal, punctuating the track with "50...bumbaclot 50!" He also big ups Big Dada by name several times -- probably several times more than any other MC who has been on the label. Across the album, there is not much advancement production-wise, yet there is just enough contrast that it does not make like Treddin' on More Thin Ice. The sounds are steelier and sharper, also lacking the cartoonish qualities of borderline-novelty tracks like "Pies," "Wot Do U Call It?," and "Goin' Mad." Beats that bob and dart hit just a little harder than before, heard most effectively on "Flyboy," where percussive jolts sound like rubber balls ricocheting off walls of an oversized racquetball court. The extra force helps bear a set of verses that is packed with self-assertive bluster, and though you can tell the self-proclaimed "Godfather of ...
| | Jim Garrett Jim & Pat Garrett Show CD (2008) (Import) Import; Digipak
Marc Anthony
$16.69 Jim and Pat Garrett Show began some years ago as a two-man act in a bar in Stockholm. The year after, the two brothers met Daddy Garrett during a wet night in the city’s club life and performed a couple of shows together. Involving Joe Garrett later the same year and thus completing the band, lead to the recordings and release of their debut album in December 2007. Shortly after, the music video and single ”This Is Not What You’d Expect” were released and Swedish Television featured another of the songs from the album, ”I Won’t Kill No More”.The music is mainly a mixture of alternative acoustic pop and various traditional folk, with often highly political lyrics as well as traditional poetry. Influences such as Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, REM, The Beatles and many more are often referred to, never to neglect the formidable work of anonymous folk musicians and poets that live on through the treasure of traditional songs we know by heart and carry on by our love for music. We would like to highlight our respect to the great folk lore composers of our country, Sweden:Carl-Mikael Bellman, Esaias Tegnér, Evert Taube, Cornelius Vreeswijk, Alf ...
