When the youthful Silverchair first appeared in the landscape-changing wake of NEVERMIND, they were solidly in the Cobain-inspired grunge mold, coming off as young disciples worshipping at the Nirvana altar with little of their own to bring to the Seattle Sound party. In '99, with Cobain long gone and grunge a distant memory, NEON BALLROOM appeared to be a bridge between Silverchair's copycat beginnings and a more adventurous future. While the heavy riffs, raspy vocals and Cobainish melodies of yesteryear are still in evidence here, the sound is greatly expanded. From a string section to delicate acoustic passages and even an appearance by classical pianist David Helfgott (of Shine fame), Silverchair works overtime to broaden their sonic horizons.

Rolling Stone (3/18/99, p.62) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...NEON BALLROOM wants to prove that this grungeling power trio has continued to mature since it first began to experiment..." Entertainment Weekly (3/19/99, p.107) - "...AC/DCish chords vie with plush strings on these adult arrangements, while frontman Daniel Johns pounds his pulpit in new politically inspired outbursts....Johns snarls, sounding furious, motivated, and all grown up." - Rating: B Q (4/99, p.106) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...Silverchair are still a riff-heavy band, but the attention to detail, to light and shade, is a welcome addition to their sound..." Simply Amazing Never before in my life have I heard an album with more emotion put into it than Neon Ballroom. Ironically, although I am a really big Silverchair fan, I was avoiding this cd for a long time for fear of how it would sound as a mix of the old, grungey sound and the new strings-laced direction they were heading. It is now my favorite CD.
Fans looking for the "old" Silverchair will relish in Anthem For the Year 2000 and Satin Sheets, but the highlights of the album lie in what they hadn't touched before. Songs like Paint Pastel Princess, Emotion Sickness and Miss You love will give you goosebumps when you really listen to the emotion put into these songs. I highly reccommend this cd to practically anyone. Submitted by Andrew (Wisconsin, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

One of Aussie's primary imports to reckon with This was the start of a beautiful relationship this band had internationally so I thought I give this album a shot. It varies. Wonder why it dropped out of the charts so quickly after its release? Oh well. Anyone dig for strings especially piano on Emotion Sickness? It rocks :) Submitted by skank992002 (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$16.45 Randy Muller\'s Boom Chang BangThere are few pleasures greater than hearing that your favorite sonic pilot has returned to burn. Your thoughts soar back to good times in humid clubs. And, as your mind rewinds the music man\'s blazing singles of yesteryear, you easily remember when those songs were the soundtrack to your life.On Groovin\' U (Plaza), the solo debut by multi-gold and platinum songwriter/arranger/producer Randy Muller – responsible for sweaty hits by Skyy (“Call Me,” “High”), B.T. Express (“Do It Till You\'re Satisfied,” “Express”), Cameron (“Boogie\'s Gonna Get Ya”), Charles Earland (“Let The Music Play”), Garnett Mimms (“What It Is”), and his own jam band Brass Construction (“Movin\',” “Changin\',” “Walkin\' The Line”), among others – he turns his attention to – no, don\'t stop reading – smooth jazz. In the process he reinforces and extends his reputation as a groove master.“In all of my work I insist on a certain rhythmic factor,” Muller explains. “This project is no exception.” Beyond dull and cheesy, the CD also contributes textural depth to the genre that sustains countless stations. Adds Muller: “I\'ve noticed a gaping hole in the smooth jazz radio format. As someone who enjoys the style instrumentally, it seemed to be dominated by sax, guitar and trumpet. When I do hear flute, it\'s usually lofty, genteel and with a deficit of soul. I long to hear a Herbie Mann or Hubert Laws doing their thing, and this album presents the flute in a more street-savvy context.”A classically-trained musician, Muller attacks his instrument with the ferocity of a natural improviser. The mood throughout is passionate and intense. “I recorded most of the flute performances at home, some time after midnight – when I am typically at my creative best,” notes Muller. Overall, a soulful, romantic quality is conveyed.Groovin\' U has been in the embryonic stage for ...
