20 De Coleccion album
$15.59 During a period of time when few jazz-oriented big bands existed outside of Harlem, the Casa Loma Orchestra helped set the stage for the swing era. Gene Gifford's arrangements for the ensemble during 1929-1935 were later criticized for using some staccato phrasing and an excess of riffs, but the music still sounds quite exciting today. Maniac's Ball mostly dates from 1931-1932, with one song from 1933, three from 1934, Larry Clinton's "A Study in Brown" from 1937, and a five-song session from 1936. In addition to a few Clinton arrangements, many of Gifford's best charts are here, including "White Jazz," "Black Jazz," "Blue Jazz," "Maniac's Ball," and "Wild Goose Chase." Of the four Hep releases that on a whole feature most of the high points of the Casa Loma recordings (skipping the more commercial dance band records), Maniac's Ball is the best all-round introduction to the music of the Casa Loma Orchestra. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Luka Bloom Riverside CD (1990)
20 De Coleccion music CDs
$11.19 So Luka Bloom is famed Irish singer/songwriter Christy Moore's younger brother, and yes, they both play a raucous acoustic guitar and sing of tormented souls and lost love; that doesn't mean that Bloom is overshadowed by his older sibling. By any standards, RIVERSIDE is a mature and stunning debut.
Although on some tracks Bloom (his adopted first name was inspired by the Suzanne Vega song) uses some fine Irish and American accompanists (Eileen Ivers on fiddle, Jane Scarpantoni on cello), RIVERSIDE mostly features his guitar and deeply expressive voice. Sometimes a husky whisper ("Gone to Pablo"), sometimes a plaintive wail ("Delirious") Bloom's voice is as much an instrument as the percussive timekeeping on the side of his acoustic guitar. "You Couldn't Have Come at a Better Time" expresses exuberant delight at the return of an errant lover, and if "An Irishman in Chinatown" verges on stage Irish, it's still a rave-up worthy of the Chieftains, or perhaps even Christy Moore himself. An emotional gem of a debut.
Recorded at R.P.M. Studios, New York, New York; S.T.S., Dublin, Ireland; and Track Record, Los Angeles, California.

| | Marian McPartland Timeless CD (2002)
20 De Coleccion album
$10.49 A collection of Marian McPartland trio recordings from 1952-1953, Timeless offers only 13 tracks, but they are certainly quality recordings at that. McPartland is heard in the studio and on six live recordings by Rudy Van Gelder made at the Hickory House in New York City. The cool-toned bop pianist begins playfully ("Strike Up the Band"), but also contributes ruminative explorations of "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "Gypsy in My Soul." Her solos are precise and very enjoyable, and the varying groups behind McPartland provide her with a strong foundation. With few collections available that chart this period, Timeless is an important release. ~ John Bush
