Elvis Crespo's Suavemente is a wonderfully seductive collection of romantic Latin ballads highlighted by "Nuestra Cancion," "Me Arrepiento," "Tu Sonrisa," "Yo Me Morire," "Llorando," "'Porque?," "Te Vas" and the title track. [The CD was also released with a bonus track.] ~ Terry Jenkins Let us speak of apt adverbs. The comely Elvis Crespo makes his U.S. debut with a soft touch indeed, on SUAVEMENTE. Mostly moderate in tempo, this assortment of merengues takes its time as it entices. So just know that this is not your tio's merengue--you'll have barely reached the faster-burning tracks by the time your blood is pumping bien calentado. Crespo commands attention on the title track with his pleading style and deliciously seductive vocal exhibition. Entrancing horn lines stretch and spiral over a bassline full of whimsical personality. For those of you who are young and feeling that sweet amor, "Nuestra Cancion" (Our Song) may easily become an anthem. The cantante and backup singers keep an exchange that is full of playful energy throughout, juicing cuts like "Yo Me Morire" up to glad heights. Powerful yet reposed in presence, Crespo has laid down a melodious delight in SUAVEMENTE. I know I am about 6 years too late but I must say when this album had came out, I was a junior in high school. I was 16 years old. I who am a proud puertorican, went to a school that was dominated by the hispanic race and this album probably was the biggest talk of all albums ever in high school. I will admitt it, this album was the album that got me into merengue. I had not known about his pevious songs with GrupoMania that started out this style of merengue like Linda Eh or Ojitos Bellos. To tell you the truth, I will admit, I did no think much of suavemente. But when I heard Tu Sonrisa, man was I hooked!!!!!!! That has to be the besst merengue song I have ever heard in my life still to this day. Not one song has come close to beating that one. Though La makina's No Me Digas Que No, is great and another one of the best songs, still Tu Sonrisa is ELvis Crespo's best song and the fact that he wrote it and produced it was just awsome. It just goes to show the ideas that Elvis had and why he had to leave Grupo Mania. Then I fell in love with merengue. All the songs I used to hate hearing, I fell in love with and now I have became a latin dj owning thousands of salsa and merengue cd's. And it is all thanks to elvis crespo. The main reason why to buy this album is Tu Sonrisa, Suavemnte, Me Arrepiento, Luna Llena, and Llorando. These songs still have not been beaten yet by any artist. You just have to see that Tono Rosario, Bony Cepeda, Johnny Ventura, were all pissed when this album came out because it broke all their years of domination in half and there was a new man in town that took over the merengue scene by storm. And his name was elvis crespo. Submitted by puertoricandj (buffalo, ny usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
