In regional Mexican music, artists tend to record frequently; it isn't uncommon for a popular norteño, banda, or mariachi artist to provide two or even three new albums every year -- which is quite a contrast to all the alternative rock, urban contemporary, and hip-hop artists who take two, three, or four years to finish a new album. Consequently, a lot of regional Mexican artists will build a large catalog in a hurry; for every new album that, say, U2 or R.E.M. provided in the '90s, los Huracanes del Norte came out with five or six. So why do los Huracanes and similar bands flood the market with so many CDs? Because they know that regional Mexican audiences can be extremely loyal. Los Huracanes have an incredibly loyal fan base, and their more hardcore fans won't think twice about acquiring every new album they come out with. But for those who have a more casual interest in norteño, seeing how huge los Huracanes' catalog is can be intimidating. When a group has provided more than 40 albums (as of 2004), casual listeners may have a hard time figuring out where to start -- which is why a best-of like Legado Norteño: Con Fuerza y Sentimiento is desperately needed. Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, feted artists as Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5, the Kaiser Chiefs, and the so hot they're actually sizzling Arctic Monkeys. Reaching back into the past, Ibrahim Ferrer and the Club also deliver up a lush cover of "As Time Goes By," Omara Portunondo joins Ferrer for an equally lavish "Casablanca," and in another (and one of her final recordings) the late singer offers up a heartrending "Killing Me Softly." Casiotone's third album finds the promise of Owen Ashworth's earlier work paying off ever more in spades. Despite a higher profile and a series of concert tours, he's not changing around the basic approach yet -- it's him, his trusty keyboards and machine beats, a guest appearance or two, and his own gift for sweet, murky, and involving songs. His gift for personal details -- an X marked on one's hand for a show, 'driving all night for no reason. . .until the tape's done' -- gets further reflection in many of the song titles, usually referencing some name in particular. "Toby, Take A Bow" is one of his best, portraying 'the greatest Smiths fan' ever with a series of sly references to song titles by said band that actually create a portrait instead of simply being a joke. Musically, meanwhile, Ashworth keeps on keeping on, wistful and warm synth lines mixed up with hollow clatters, and an overlay of enveloping murk that never drowns the songs entirely. It's a fine balance of the merry and the melancholic, as the clipped beats and low drones of "It Wasn't the Same Somehow" and the melancholia turned into an anthem approach of "Hey Eleanor" and "Blue Corolla" show.
