$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked ...
| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Ao Vivo album
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Ao Vivo CD music
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, ...
| | Huun-Huur-Tu If I'D Been Born An Eagle CD (1997)
Ao Vivo music CDs
$14.45 Huun-Huur Tu brings rural Tuvan folk songs to the world stage, employing a technique commonly referred to as "throat singing." In this vocal approach, tones are split into several parts (most notably a bass drone and a high-pitched whistle) deep within the throat. This quartet is one of the world's best-kept secrets, led by the spectacularly talented Kaigal-ool Khovalyg--who is often referred to as the Pavarotti of the East. The band also plays a variety of stringed and percussive instruments indigenous to Siberia, including the doshpuluur, the kargyraa, and the xoomei. The playing and singing engenders organic dialogs, evoking pastoral scenes of remote villages, fields, passing birds, and cantering horses.
Because Tuva is located in the part of Siberia nearest to China, the angular melodies and spacious structures of its native music are closest to the Asian conception of music. The group's ghostly sound pushes the wistful folk melodies into alien, mind-expanding territory. Huun-Huur Tu's other ...
| | Doris Day The Pajama Game CD (1957) SDTK
Ao Vivo songs
$10.55 The film THE PAJAMA GAME, based on the 1954 Broadway musical, opened in theaters in 1957, and while it paled somewhat in comparison to its original counterpart, it did feature most of the original cast and the then tremendous star power of Doris Day. John Raitt, Carol Haney, ...
| | Psychedelic States: Alabama In The '60S CD (2002)
Ao Vivo album
$11.49 By this fifth installment, it had already become quite clear the logic that reissue label Gear Fab used to put together the CDs in its Psychedelic States series. The modus operandi entails recovering as many obscurities and unknowns as possible from the maw of the '60s on a regional basis and presenting them, for better or worse, to the public no frills. If rather more than fewer of the songs tend to lean toward the "for worse" side of the spectrum, so be it. Even the stinkers tend to be loveable in their hormonal, beetle-booted, eczematous mediocrity, instant time capsules to transport the listener to a halcyon rock era when virtually every suburban garage and Elks club came stocked with its own Beatles or Rolling Stones manqué no matter how remote or unlikely the region in which they were situated. In the case of this entry in the series, those ...

$51.89 Those familiar with songwriter and lead singer Rob Pollard's quirky genius already know how inescapably catchy his tunes can be, how disorienting and delightful his shape-shifting persona, and how hard his band can rock. They also probably know how irrepressibly prolific he is, which is where this excellent six-disc box set--which collects only a sliver of GBV's monolithic vault of material--comes in.
The discs are divided by function and/or source, with one offering up ...
