Idilio album
$5.59 After an exploration away from the mainstream of salsa that would last nearly ten years, beginning with the release of 1984's Buscando América, Rubén Blades fans who missed the coro-shouting, compana-banging fun of his Fania years will rejoice in Caminando. Though a contemporary release, with plenty of contemporary influence, Blades' playlist on this record is much more salsa than fusion. From the rollicking, joyful title cut, to the slinky, trombone-driven Colón-esque "Prohibido Olvidar," the Rubén Blades made famous in the dancehalls is back, if but for a short time. The production on Caminando is unique to other Blades productions. The treatment of his voice has a hollow, retro quality that is curious and yet charming. The band, comprised mostly of his recent Seis del Solar cohorts, Ralph Irizarry, Robby Ameen, Oscar Hernandez, Eddy Montalvo, and others, sounds warm and classic. Perhaps it is the tonality of the record, or maybe 1991 was a great year for writing, but ...

| | Calle Real Con Fuerza CD (2006)
Idilio songs
$16.49 Seeing Calle Real you might think it's is punk or hip-hop, but it's not. Calle Real is a modern Latin, a.k.a. Timba and songo as it is breaking up walls that the predecessors never came close to. This band is good news from Stockholm, Sweden, with an unforgivably tight sound and a groove machinery that can melt the heart of listeners all over the world as well as of the Nordic winter. The explosive creativity of the band embraces influences from Cuba and Europe and is based on up-tempo Latin grooves. A heavy thythm section on a base of congas, timbales, drums and solid brass back-ups firming trumpet, trombome, compact piano and a Cuban tres. The band writes, composes and arranges its own music and presents a show well suited for festivals and club gigs. This album, Calle Real's first, is a proof of the band's strong melodies and catchy hooks where modern salsa meets timba, songo and son. Are you ready for CALLE REAL CON FUERZA?An interesting detail is that the percussionist for Calle Real, Rickard Valdes is the youngest son of multiple Grammy Winner Bebo Valdes and brother to also multiple Grammy Winner Chucho Valdes, arguably two of Cuba's greatest piano players.

| | Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba CD (2006)
Idilio album
$15.65 Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, feted artists as Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5, the Kaiser Chiefs, and the so hot they're actually sizzling Arctic Monkeys. Reaching back into the past, Ibrahim Ferrer and the Club also deliver up a lush cover of "As Time Goes By," Omara Portunondo joins Ferrer for an equally lavish "Casablanca," and in another (and one of her final recordings) the late singer offers up a heartrending ...
