Fittingly for a band inspired by the Grateful Dead, Blues Traveler has made its name on the live stage, where it plays with a chemistry that is the stuff of legend. LIVE FROM THE FALL, a 2-disc set, captures the improvisational magic the band weaves night after night.

On LIVE FROM THE FALL, Blues Traveler visits the hits from its four studio albums (including "Runaround"), throws in some favorite covers ("Imagine," "Low Rider") and stretches out on some monumental jams ("Mountain Cry," "Alone"). John Popper's harmonica playing makes the transition from runaway locomotive on "Love And Greed" to fife-like peaks on "Mulling It Over." Drummer Brendan Hill and bassist Bob Sheehan are a formidable rhythm section, able to throw down hyper-beats and chugging tempos on "New York Prophesie," while Chan Kinchla's chicken-scratch guitar dances around the fan favorite "Gina."

Blues Traveler: John Popper (vocals, harmonica, guitar); Chan Kinchla (guitar); Bob Sheehan (bass); Brendan Hill (drums, percussion).

Producers: Dave Swanson, Rich Vink, John Popper, Brendan Hill, Bob Sheehan, Chan Kinchla.

Rolling Stone (8/22/96) - 3-1/2 Stars - Good/Excellent - "...great sound...and mammoth, woolly jams that go on longer than the Freemen standoff....the loose, unbridled feel of a San Francisco ballroom hoedown circa 1967....an extra half star for a strong work ethic and sticking to principles."

Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD  (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered

Live From The Fall
CD $6.29  4.6 stars Top 100 Audio Samples Definitive Album
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz. Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying ...

Though Blues Traveler wouldn't have their big pop breakthrough hit, "Runaround," for another four years, they were already a popular live draw by the time of their 1990 self-titled debut. As perhaps the prototypical jam band, Blues Traveler's played live sets that were ever-changing affairs, but this loose, organic-sounding album is a more than fair approximation of the group's early sound, both in the fluid song structures and the way that singer and harmonica player John Popper thoroughly dominates the proceedings. The lengthy songs spiral out into platforms for ...

"I have my moments," John Popper declares, and many of them -- as harmonica player, singer, and lyricist -- are here, on an album that finds Blues Traveler stretching out much as they do on-stage. Popper is a man with a lot ...

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat ...

A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern ...

Oh Me Oh My...The Way The Day Goes By
Devendra Banhart Oh Me Oh My...The Way The Day Goes By CD  (2002)

Live From The Fall
CD $12.79
The first thing that strikes you about Devendra Banhart is his utterly unique and soft voice, which seems a mix of Nick Drake and Marc Bolan. "Roots (If the Sky Were a Stone)" is a perfect example of this, as Banhart uses his vocals and an acoustic guitar to get his brief yet often memorable points across. Originally recorded on shoddy and broken four-track recorders, the songs have a definitive roughness and audible hiss on nearly all of them, giving them a certain authenticity rarely found. Cars can be heard driving past in "The Charles C. Leary," but that performance is only one of the many highlights here. A number of the tracks are less than or just over one minute in length, often stream-of-conscious poetry put to music. The fragility heard in "Nice People" resembles Victoria Williams but evolves into a Syd Barrett song structure, speaking of "wide ass suits and lion tattoos." Barrett can be discerned throughout the record, especially during "Gentle Soul." "Cosmos and Demos" lends itself more toward Pink Floyd performing something from Echoes, ...
