One listen to Tonic's debut album makes it obvious that the band is influenced and inspired by a mind-boggling array of musical genres, ranging from classic guitar rock to traditional Irish ballads. Accordingly, LEMON PARADE's sound ranges from big, loud, electrified rock to something more melodic and lyrical. The overwhelming sense is of an invigorating, refreshing absence of gimmick or attitude; just straightforward, tightly constructed guitar melodies and singer Emerson Hart's intense and confident vocals.
Hart's songwriting is equally unaffected, exploring a variety of themes which all seem to hinge on personal relationships, including "My Old Man," which examines the complicated nature of a father-son relationship, and the sweet-natured title track, which imagines the girlhood of a lover: "Did the boys all tease you when they had the chance/Always left standing when it came time to dance?".

RIP (9/96, pp.72-73) - 3 (out of 5) - "...the band...excels when they use acoustic Zeppelin as a touchstone....All in all, [Tonic] shows a lot of promise." | | matchbox Yourself Or Someone Like You CD (1996)
Lemon Parade CD music
$13.95 "Push" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
On YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU, Matchbox 20's debut, vocalist/lyricist Rob Thomas leads his band down the same path as Counting Crows, to a post-Pearl Jam, Van Morrison/Band-influenced home at the top of the charts. Thomas' raspy voice wraps a romanticized alienation around folky, roots-inflected rock tunes that share the thematic aspirations of Van circa TUPELO HONEY and The Band's self-titled second album, if not their literary wisdom.
Having ...

On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic guitars with dirtier ...

| | Tonic Sugar CD (1999)
Lemon Parade album
$12.65 Dan Lavery (Fender Rhodes piano, Moog bass pedals, bass, background vocals).
An oasis in a desert of souring pop bands--that's the best way to describe Tonic's sophomore release, SUGAR. The trio delivers hooks like a prizefighter, and their balance of tension and melody makes for consistently memorable songs. "Knock Down Walls" is an anthem of love and manipulation, as vocalist/guitarist Emerson Hart sings, "you always grab a hold of the ones you can change/just a group of loner zeroes who ...

| | Movielife This Time Next Year CDs (2000)
Lemon Parade music CDs
$11.55 Imagine if you will a slightly deeper hardcore influence on a slightly less appealing version of the Get Up Kids. That's about what to expect from the Movielife, a four-piece from the musical tundra of Long Island who actually have a tolerable grasp on catchy melodies and supportive harmonies. They also toss in some hard-edged breakdowns and fill whatever voids are left with plenty of nasal punk-pop-styled vocals. Produced by Brian McTernan, a rocker slowly reaching veteran status, This Time Next Year has some fairly well played drums and the expected amount of clichéd stops and thundering reentries. There ...
