Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs songs A question for the ages, and certainly EC's love-life set the backdrop for this offering, what with his fixation on another guitar icon's wife, and his dark affair with another mistress. You know, the spoonful. Not that Eric was exactly a faithful lover, his list of spurned suitors included The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, and even his own solo career. So if rock fans were weary of the chameleon's various disguises, this particular incarnation didn't exactly inspire much confidence. With the exception of drummer Jim Gordon (known as the human metronome for his steady pulse in sessions) the Dominoes were journeymen unknown to the critics or the public at large. But fortune sometimes smiles on heartbroken junkies, especially when you hire Tom Dowd to produce and engineer, he of long-time fame with the likes of Ray Charles (speaking of spoons and bad love) and the rest of the Atlantic catalog. His connection with the Allman Brothers led to the inclusion of Duane Allman to rescue what had been some frustrating early attempts at Criterion Studios in Miami, and suddenly a fire was set that still burns almost forty years later. From the opening bars of "I Looked Away", there is a realization that this is a full-grown man coming to grips with his art and his reputation, and despite his English tan (check the photos... smile) and his poor choice of medicine Eric never sounded so robust. Bobby Whitlock plays the perfect foil, lending a solid keyboard and vocal support that previous divas (Steve Winwood e.g. ) seemed unwilling or unable to deliver. "Bell Bottom Blues" follows, and the interplay between the twin guitars and vocals allow Clapton to shine without the onus of being the so-called star. And let's not forget that his biggest successes up to this point were all collaborations, as a sometime vocalist and increasingly reticent soloist. So to hear him take control of an entire record vocally was probably the biggest surprise for fans expecting a guitar-fest. Not that there is any letdown in that department, the record is chock-full of fine work, both Allman and Clapton spurring each other to heights neither reached before or since as they rolled through blues chestnuts like "Nobody Knows You When You're Know and Out" and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman", and of course you'd have to live in a cave to escape "Layla" on FM radio (one billion plays and counting). Unlike a lot of double L.P. s, this record has a lot of nice surprises, and is well worth the extra effort of carful listening.... Enjoy!! JJ.

First piece of music I ever purchased!
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album for sale I had never purchased a recording outside of a 45 RPM record until I was in high school back in the early 70's. Upon purchasing my first car the first addition I needed was an eight track tape player and speakers. It was either this or the Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn was the first eight track tape I purchased. I remember distinctly when and where I purchased this on eight track. It was at an old demolished Sears. It was expensive back then but I had to have it! My parents didn't really want me to squander the money on it, but I just had to have it. The only song I knew off it was Layla. Worth the price alone. I remember how dejected I was the first time I listened to it as back then I knew nothing of the blues and there was feedback from other songs ringing through. Either my heads were out of alignment or the tape was defective. Then it began to grow on me. Eventually the tape was eaten up by my eight track, now some twenty five years later I have ordered this remastered copy on cd. I can't wait to get it, it will bring back such great memories. Honestly there are a few tracks I know I'm still not crazy about but the majority are above and beyond! The way that "I Looked Away" rings into "Bell Bottom Blues"! It's not the same just listening to "Bell Bottom Blues" on some greatest hits compilation. Gosh, "Little Wing", "Thorn Tree in the Garden", "Anyday" as well as of course the full unabridged "Layla"! This is fantastic! I know it will sound so much better than my first eight track tape!

Superior Digital Remaster, Historic Blues/Rock
Iím not a Clapton fan per-say that said, what of the musicianship, artistry and performance of this work: Layla is definitely a must have for any music library. The blues/rock efforts labored forth in Layla, Thorn Tree In The Garden and Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad stand out as for reason enough to have this CD. Bell Bottom Blues and Little Wing are also historic songs. The best part, this release version (UPC: 7-31453-1820-2) is a Digital Remaster of the original tapes using Apogee 20-bit encoding and sounds superior to any other Iíve examined as of 2004. I hope that this is helpful to you, enjoy this CD.

WOW
Clapton and Allman are both in the top 10 best guitarist of all-time list. I just wish this super group would have stuck togehter to produce more records.

Derek & the boys are tops
I have been a Clapton fan since 1968 and this is one of his better works. What I find amazing is that there are only a few songs that get all the air time and are not necessarily the best songs on the album. Im more impressed with "Little Wing" and "Why does love got to be so sad" then I am with "Bell bottom blues" or "Layla" Thats not to say that I dont like them but they have been played beyond their own merits. The other great thing that is most often over looked on this LP is some really great blues. So much for our radio stations that only seem to want to play Top 40's instead of great music.
