After playing the 1973 Rainbow Concerts that were arranged by good friend Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton returned to Florida's Criteria Recording Studio to cut 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. Because of a stint of personal turmoil, Clapton had not played guitar for two years preceeding the Rainbow Concerts, but with the help of a core group of musicians including George Terry, former Derek & the Dominos bassist Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, and Yvonne Elliman, Slowhand put together an album that many consider to be his best.
Focusing more on his singing than his guitar pyrotechnics of the past, the new, improved Clapton used a laid-back, J.J. Cale-type vocal style to great effect on a mellow version of "Willie And The Hand Jive" and Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out." Far from being a kinder, gentler guitar hero, Clapton also showed considerable spark on a slide-drenched "Motherless Children" and the driving "Mainline Florida," which closes out the album. Of course, his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" was the musical statement that took him to the top of the charts and let the general public know he was back. 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD is still one of the highest points of Clapton's solo career.

Eric Clapton 461 Ocean BLVD. Songs 461 Ocean BLVD. Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) MY hero Way back when EC was a drunk, drugged up muso, he was commited to great music. This album was a huge breakthrough for EC. Every track is a gem, well, all except the Marley tune. I have always gone back to this album after a current new EC release, it reminds me why a generation thought of him as god. Oh for the quality of the past, come on Eric, give us one more good album. Perhaps I hope too much. Submitted by Fullerat (Jax FLA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
high quality recording This is not Eric Clapton known in 90s' or in XXI century. But it is relaxing and full of beauty album. What is outstanding? - the great quality of remastered recording. I am surpriced looking at the date of the issue - 1974. Sound is in real 3D mode. Enjoyable. Submitted by Kit (Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Vital to Any Collection '461 Ocean Boulevard' and 'Slowhand' are the vital Clapton solo CDs to own. Everyone knows Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" and anyone who ever listens to classic rock radio should know "Let It Grow," "Motherless Children," and "Willie and the Hand Jive." If that's not enough, there's "Mainline Florida" and Clapton's cover of Robert Johnson's "Steady Rollin' Man." Masterful. Submitted by WavDave (KC MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Boring & Uninspired This CD was a disappointment 30 years ago as an album, and time has only proven it to be among the poorest work Clapton has recorded. Boring, uninspired, just two words I could use to describe this CD. There is no fire in the songs and if mellow was the intention, he even fails to capture that. The lone good song is "Please Be with Me". Being a Clapton fan I gave this album another chance to prove me wrong, but after many listens I took it to a used CD shop to recoup some of my money. By digitally remixing and remastering these sessions, the producers have resurrected one of Eric Clapton's greatest achievements, his instrumental and songwriting peak. Musically, Clapton was inspired by his new rhythm section and challenged by fellow guitar hero Duane Allman, whose torrid slide guitar makes blues-blasts like "Nobody ...

461 Ocean BLVD. CD music
$10.59 By 1975, Eric Clapton was coming off the smash success of 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. If his last album was a cathartic release after coming out of a battle with drug addiction, then THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD was the first record where Clapton could catch his breath. Having become enamored with reggae after riding Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" to the top of the charts around the world, E.C. chose to record in Kingston, ...

$6.49 Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, ...
