Having made his best album since 461 Ocean Boulevard with Slowhand, Eric Clapton followed with Backless, which took the same authoritative, no-nonsense approach. If it wasn't quite the masterpiece, or the sales monster, that Slowhand had been, this probably was because of that usual Clapton problem -- material. Once again, he returned to those Oklahoma hills for another song from J.J. Cale, but "I'll Make Love to You Anytime" wasn't quite up to "Cocaine" or "After Midnight." Bob Dylan contributed two songs, but you could see why he hadn't saved them for his own album, and Clapton's own writing contributions were mediocre. Clapton did earn a Top Ten hit with Richard Feldman and Roger Linn's understated pop shuffle "Promises," but it was not one of his more memorable recordings. Of course, Clapton's blues playing on the lone obligatory blues cut, "Early in the Morning" (presented in its full eight-minute version on the CD reissue), was stellar. (Backless was his last album to feature the backup group that had been with him since 1974.) ~ William Ruhlmann Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, proved her worth by co-writing the slide-drenched "Roll It" with Slowhand. Her passionate testifying on this as well as her sparkling harmonies on the Don Williams-influenced "Promises" made up for fellow back-up singer Yvonne Elliman's departure following SLOWHAND's release. Clapton's choice of composers to cover included Dylan ("Walk Out In The Rain," "If I Don't Be There By Morning"), J.J. Cale ("I'll Make Love To You Anytime") and Okie Danny Flowers ("Tulsa Time"). In addition, Slowhand added a nearly eight-minute interpretation of the blues standard "Early In The Morning" that finds him milking his mojo for all its worth. But it's E.C.'s original compositions that particularly stand out, such as the funky shuffle that is "Watch Out For Lucy" and the Band-flavored "Golden Ring."

Eric Clapton Backless Songs Backless Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Clapton's BEST 70s album I can vividly recall hearing this album for the first time when I was 12 years old, and it was to be the first Clapton CD I added to my collection. Being a BIG Clapton fan for the past 20 years, I can say a lot of good things about almost all his albums, but "Backless" has to come out on top from all perspectives.
This one has the best mix of his laid back blues, country and rock styles. Clapton carefully balances his guitar prowess with his bandmates so that each artist gets to shine in their own right.
Beginning with the gentle "Walk out of my life", the album opens on a mellow yet catchy note before soon moving on to a 'sexy blues' cover of Cale's "I'll make love to you any old time" (some of the best wah - wah guitar playing you'll ever here!). Marcy Levy's backing vocals work well with Clapton's screaming slide guitar on "Roll it" while "If I don't be there by morning" is one of his best rock numbers ever. "Early in the morning" is lowdown dirty blues, something that can be enjoyed in the wee hours of the morning, chilling out after work or while you're knocking back some drinks. And then there's the cynical yet melodic hit "Promises". Finally the album ends with the country-funk fusion of "Tulsa time", a catchy number with some great slide guitar and fantastic piano playing from Dick Simms.
This album epitomises all Clapton's 70s styles and stands the test of time. Every time I hear it I appreciate it so much more. If you like good rock n roll, soulful blues and a nice touch of country, give it a listen. It's not hard rock - it's a vintage album from an accomplished artist who, like JJ Cale, knows how to lay down a good groove with the formula 'less is better'. On of My All-Time Favorites ! I heard this (LP) many moons ago while sharing some "enlightenment" with my uncle... made my hair stand up. It was one of those moments in a young persons life where one tunes into the artistry of the music rather than just the beat or rhythm. It all came together for me that summer, and I was listening to "Backless" while it happened. Submitted by JayBird (Charlotte, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
