Clapton's BEST 70s album
I can vividly recall hearing this album for the first time when I was 12 years old, and it was to be the first Clapton CD I added to my collection. Being a BIG Clapton fan for the past 20 years, I can say a lot of good things about almost all his albums, but "Backless" has to come out on top from all perspectives.
This one has the best mix of his laid back blues, country and rock styles. Clapton carefully balances his guitar prowess with his bandmates so that each artist gets to shine in their own right.
Beginning with the gentle "Walk out of my life", the album opens on a mellow yet catchy note before soon moving on to a 'sexy blues' cover of Cale's "I'll make love to you any old time" (some of the best wah - wah guitar playing you'll ever here!). Marcy Levy's backing vocals work well with Clapton's screaming slide guitar on "Roll it" while "If I don't be there by morning" is one of his best rock numbers ever. "Early in the morning" is lowdown dirty blues, something that can be enjoyed in the wee hours of the morning, chilling out after work or while you're knocking back some drinks. And then there's the cynical yet melodic hit "Promises". Finally the album ends with the country-funk fusion of "Tulsa time", a catchy number with some great slide guitar and fantastic piano playing from Dick Simms.
This album epitomises all Clapton's 70s styles and stands the test of time. Every time I hear it I appreciate it so much more. If you like good rock n roll, soulful blues and a nice touch of country, give it a listen. It's not hard rock - it's a vintage album from an accomplished artist who, like JJ Cale, knows how to lay down a good groove with the formula 'less is better'.
