The Brothers Johnson first earned national recognition as recording artists by singing the sensuously funky mid-tempo number "Is It Love That We're Missin'," featured on Quincy Jones' album Mellow Madness. The dynamic duo maintains that same groove on this, its debut release for A&M Records. The first single was the moderate number "I'll Be Good to You," which is soothing like a ballad but inducing like a liquid funk cut. The guitar tandem landed on top of the R&B charts with this gold-selling single. They returned to the Top Five with the bona fide funk jam "Get the Funk out of My Face," which peaked at number four. Their remake of the Beatles' classic "Come Together" comes with a soulful twist. Aside from this remake, the Brothers co-wrote every other song on this album, including the untarnished instrumental "Tomorrow," which later became a number one single for Quincy Jones' Back on the Block. This album is consistent throughout. ~ Craig Lytle Brothers Johnson Look Out For #1 Songs Look Out For #1 Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Yet another funk essential This is yet another funk essential. Bestest funk debut of 1976 This record funks and thumps like a band that's been around the 'hood a few times but has the high N-R-G of a newly discovered youthful synergy. The Brothers Johnson funk up some butt-moving grooves that lock on and ride... Where other contemporaries, such as Slave and the Trammps cheese out with lightweight disco fare filling out the record, the Johnsons burn the roof off here and keep the disco stylisms in their place (with the help of Quincy Jones) - as production stylisms, and not as a musical ideals. it's number one so look out! at a time in music when things seem to be at a stand still, "blam" here comes the Brothers Johnson right on time. The music was fresh, new, and yet familiar. A very solid and sonically sound album. Thier vocals are clean and harmonic. The music is is thunderous, and sutle, but most of all new and all the Brothers Johnson.
