Styx: Tommy Shaw (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); James Young (vocals, guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Chuck Panozzo (vocals, bass); John Panozzo (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at Paragon Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Crystal Ball wasn't as successful as Equinox, but it was a better album, showcasing Styx's increased skill for crafting simple, catchy pop hooks out of their bombastic sound. ~ Daevid Jehnzen CRYSTAL BALL marks a major turning point for Styx. Original member John Curulewski was replaced by young guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Tommy Shaw whose rock energy and pop smarts would soon help lead the group to superstardom by contributing some of Styx's most memorable tunes. He debuts auspiciously enough here, co-writing a couple of songs with Dennis DeYoung and James Young. Predictably, though, his solo compositions are the most effective, including the folky, introspective ballad that gives the album its title, and the gritty rocker "Shooz." For his part, DeYoung contributes a couple of ingratiating romantic paeans ("Jennifer," "Ballerina") and a somewhat overwrought tribute to the working man ("This Old Man"). With Shaw on board, however, Styx was clearly ready for the big time. Crystal Ball
$6.49 Personnel: John Curulewski (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); James Young (vocals, guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Chuck Panozzo (vocals, bass guitar); John Panozzo (vocals, drums, percussion). Audio Remixers: Styx; Barry Mraz. Photographer: Chris Micoine. Equinox produced Styx's first single with A&M, the highly spirited "Lorelei," which found its way to number 27 on the charts. Although it was the only song to chart from Equinox, the album itself is a benchmark in the band's career since it includes an instrumental nature reminiscent of their early progressive years, yet hints toward a more commercial-sounding future in its lyrics. "Light Up" is a brilliant display ...

| | Styx Pieces Of Eight CD (1978)
Crystal Ball
$6.49 Personnel: James Young , Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards); John Panozzo (vocals, drums); Chuck Panozzo (vocals). Recording information: Cathedral Of St. James, Chicago, IL. Unknown Contributor Roles: Dennis DeYoung; Tommy Shaw. Styx's feisty, straightforward brand of album rock is represented best by "Blue Collar Man" from 1978's Pieces of Eight, an invigorating keyboard and guitar rush -- hard and heavy, yet curved by Tommy Shaw's emphasized vocals. Reaching number 21, with the frolicking romp of "Renegade" edging in at number 16 only six months later, Pieces of Eight maintained their strength as a front-running FM radio group. Even though these ...

| | Ronan Keating Ronan (Revised) CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Crystal Ball
$10.49 This outing by Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, formerly of Boyzone, includes "In This Life," "Heal Me," and "Brighter Days." The Britsh edition presents two additional tracks. Unanimously, the most popular singer from the Irish group Boyzone is lead singer Ronan Keating whose debut solo album is aptly titled Ronan. The album retains some of Boyzone's style, though it is appropriately, if not determinedly, subdued. That is a bit of a shock for a debut. Keeping in mind that Gary Barlow tried the same thing and missed the target, while Robbie Williams went all out with an egocentric rock album and became a British landmark, one would have expected a little more oomph. Ronan must not be caught up in trends. Besides, the album seems to fit his personality, which is quieter and modest compared to most boy group members. The album sports the number one European singles "When You Say Nothing at All" and "Life Is a Rollercoaster," which helped propel the album to the top of the charts for a short while. Indeed, it did not stand out as one of the great musical triumphs of the year, but it is not without charm, thanks to its sincerity. Bryan Adams provides the soft ballad "The Way You Make Me Feel," while Rick Nowels conjures up another spirituality-driven effort on "Heal Me," as well as a slightly more exciting "Rollercoaster." "If I Don't Tell You Now" is a Diane Warren-penned ...

Crystal Ball
$15.15 HERE is a 10-track release by '70s and '80s hit pop singer Leo Sayer and includes "World Has Changed," "When The Money Runs Out," and "Work." CD contains 3 bonus tracks. Reunited with David Courtney, the producer of his first American hit "Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)" from 1975's Just A Boy LP, Leo Sayer's first album after three with Richard Perry yielded no significant hits in America but is a refined and entertaining chapter in the minstrel's history. There are two co-writes with Courtney, one with Ray Parker, Jr. who racked up 13 hits of his own between 1978 and 1990, a version of Al Kooper's "Lost Control" with Kooper on organ and synths, and one of the most telling tracks, a nice remake of the Chi Lites' 1972 number one hit "Oh Girl." This is notable because most of Sayer's material is usually original work written by him or his colleagues, relatively unknown titles, with the exception of the Supremes' "Reflections" on Endless Flight from 1976, and his minor hit with ...
