Building on the bandmembers' own personal accomplishments that came from the Rockin' Into the Night album, .38 Special released an even stronger bunch of songs a year later with Wild-Eyed Southern Boys. Focusing on the same Southern-based rock & roll formula, the efforts from Southern Boys contain a little more guitar zing while complementing the band's ability to produce marketable radio music. "Hold on Loosely," with its smooth vocal stride, managed to peak at number 27 in April of 1981, giving .38 Special its first Top 40 single, and the title track, "Honky Tonk Dancer," and "Back Alley Sally" keep a homespun flavor alive and well, indicating that the band's Southern roots haven't been dismissed completely. Even though the bulk of the tracks lean toward .38 Special's rootin'-tootin' good-time persona, tracks such as "Fantasy Girl" and "First Time Around" reveal a stronger regard for producing catchy and approachable rock & roll tunes. It's on Wild-Eyed Southern Boys that .38 Special seemed more confident, harnessing a distinct guitar rock sound that enabled the group to distinguish itself from other FM rock bands. Cracking the Top 20 on the album charts and eventually reaching platinum status, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys marked the onset of the band's success throughout the course of the decade. ~ Mike DeGagne

| | Blue October Consent To Treatment CD (2000)
Wild-Eyed Southern Boys MP3 Album
$9.65 (MP3 Available for Download) This major-label debut from Houston's Blue October is an obscure treat driven by an unconventional, dynamic, and intelligent rock energy. Vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Justin Furstenfeld comes off on Consent to Treatment like an angry, Midwestern Peter Gabriel who has been listening to too much Eddie Vedder. As Furstenfeld plows through one irascible breakup track after another, the theme of transformation -- isolation into independent, proud self-sufficiency -- places a specific cast on almost every pained yet exuberant lyric. With the somewhat unusual lineup of Jeremy Furstenfeld on drums, Matt Noveskey on bass, and Ryan Delahoussaye spicing things up with violin, vocalist Furstenfeld uses the considerable talents of his band with skill and finesse. Delahoussaye's transparent additions come off more like keyboard lines, as they are frequently stacked ...
| | Fall Middle Class Revolt CDs (1994) Bonus CD
Wild-Eyed Southern Boys music CDs
$17.15 1994's MIDDLE-CLASS REVOLT, the second and last album of The Fall's brief tenure with Matador records, is the long-running and amazingly prolific band's best album of the '90s. This is probably The Fall's strongest work since the mid-'80s era, when singer/provocateur Mark E. Smith's stridency was tempered by the smart pop tendencies of his guitar-playing then-wife Brix.
Like those albums, MIDDLE-CLASS REVOLT features somewhat off-kilter guitar pop, downplaying the electronic tendencies of the band's turn-of-the-decade work in favor of catchy riff-based songs.
The guitars are most prominent on "Hey! Student," a song that the band had included in its earliest live sets, back in 1977, as "Hey! Fascist," and the punkish roar of "M5#1" and "Behind the Counter." Elsewhere, The Fall displays excellent taste in outside material by covering '60s avant-gardists The Monks' excellent "Shut Up!" and "War," a song from the mid-'70s art-rock merger of Henry Cow and Slapp Happy.
A mixture of lackluster performances and songs filled with vigor and fury, Middle Class Revolt is a puzzling proposition ...

$10.15 (MP3 Available for Download) The Swellers are in the process of bringing high-energy punk rock to all corners of the U.S. Their new breed of melodic and driving punk rock incorporates pop sensibility, making listeners pump their fist, and belt the words to every hook. It is "all-out punk rock with some good old rock riffs and catchy moments, regardless of any trends or fashion scenes" as State of Emergency coins it. It is refreshingly honest and talented music. The craftsmanship in song writing distinguishes The Swellers from the average punk rock crew. Complexly perfect vocal and guitar harmonies polish their collection of songs. The Swellers have been perfecting their live act for the past two and a half years playing hundreds of shows and sharing the stage with such national ...
