(5 Customer Reviews)
The advertisements for Fairport Convention's epoch-making fourth album ran: "the first (literally) British folk rock LP ever." While that's not (literally) true, LIEGE & LIEF created the template for all subsequent recordings in that style. It also represented a catharsis for the band, which reconvened after a traumatic road accident that killed drummer Martin Lamble. Once again focused and with redoubtable folk fiddler Dave Swarbrick now permanently involved, Fairport threw themselves into the electrification of ballads, myths, and rollicking jigs. The results were both innovative and stimulating. The union was blessed. If you sat down and tried to imagine a dream folk-rock band, it still would not match the potential here. From the lusting pace of "Matty Groves" to the tender cooing of "Crazy Man Michael," Sandy Denny's voice and Richard Thompson's virtuosic guitar are the perfect conduits for this milestone, which has been imitated a thousand times, but never equalled.
Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Simon Nicol, Richard Thompson (guitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin, viola); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums).
Personnel: Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, mandolin, violin, viola); Ashley Hutchings (vocals, bass guitar); Dave Mattacks (drums).
Q (11/99, p.163) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Folk Albums of All Time - "...the group's most influential hour....it revolutionized the genre....Folk-rock's defining moment." Uncut (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[R]ightly considered a folk-rock landmark, Fairport's fourth album contains music too mercurial to be constrained within one genre." Uncut (p.174) - "LIEGE & LIEF set out a template for how rock and British folk could fuse together and become at once mystical and vital..." The Wire (12/00, p.39) - "...The group's masterpiece....this is one of the monumentally great records of the last 40 years....A focused and thematically coherent work, the whole record steams along at an excited pace..." Q (Magazine) (p.122) - "[A] folk-rock landmark, an amalgamation of traditional songs and self-penned ones that sounded just as authentically ancient." Mojo (Publisher) (p.72) - "LIEGE & LIFE saw the Fairports burrow further into the comfort and shade of English folklore to give birth to folk rock." Greatest stories ever told ! I wish I had never heard this album so that I now could experience it for the first time. I love many folk bands and many folk albums but this album is superior to all others as the flame is to the spark. If you haven't heard her before Sandy Denny sings in the most head-wreckingly beautiful tones and the dynamic rhythmic driver of the songs is the incomparable Richard Thompson who I feel produces his best work in the traditional genre. Here in Ireland any folk critic deserving of any credibility knows this album to be the crowning achievement of the wonderful revival period 1969-70. Buy it ! Submitted by Michael Igoe / migoe44 (Virginia , Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

outstanding in every way This is an outstanding record, probably one of the best ever of its kind. The material (mostly traditional, but also a few originals) is all intriguing, their arrangements are excellent, and Sandy Denny's singing and everyone else's playing are impeccable. There are no dud tracks. A correction to the previous review here: this is an English band, using traditional English material -- they are not Irish! Five Stars With this album, Fairport Convention finally became an Irish Rock Band instead of a Rock Band from Ireland. By taking some traditional Irish melodies and rewriting lyrics, as well as playing traditional Irish instruments, Fairport Convention became, with this album, a trailblazer into the genre of Electric Irish Music. Perhaps their best album and Sandy Denny's last with the group.
A must have for any fan of electric Irish music. Submitted by a reviewer (Grand Isle VT USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Bongos Drums Along The Hudson CD (1982) (Import) Special Edition; Australia
Liege & Lief
$13.35 All songs written by Richard Barone except "Video Eyes" (Rob Norris).
To a small but hardy fanbase, the Bongos were to Hoboken what the Beatles were to Liverpool. Fronted by McCartneyesque singer-songwriter Richard Barone, the band filtered British '60s pop and '70s glam (see the cover of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun") through a distinctly early-1980s powerpop/new wave sensibility. Their debut album, DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON, remains their finest moment, bursting with youthful exuberance, irresistible hooks, and a touch of mystery via Barone's elliptical lyrics and atmospheric e-bow guitar lines.
27 years after it's release, DRUMS received the deluxe reissue treatment, replete with snappy remastering and bonus live versions of almost every song on the original album. Though the Bongos didn't survive the decade, DRUMS is one of the most indelible relics of its era, marrying melodic elegance, fresh-faced exhilaration, ...
