The recruitment of Jim Vallance behind the drums and bass player Mike Porcaro didn't bring .38 Special the kind of help the band was looking for with 1986's Strength in Numbers. Following a string of convincing albums (Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, Special Forces, Tour de Force) during the early '80s, the band decided to take a couple of years off before returning to the studio, but after doing so, it seemed that the bandmembers had left their knack for producing affable radio songs behind them. The album sports a minor hit in "Like No Other Night," but it can't compare to previous efforts like "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong," or "Teacher Teacher,". A little bit of color emerges from some occasional sax and trombone bits, but the overall package is below the standards of what .38 Special is capable of. Actually, it's with Strength in Numbers that the band began to diminish in all areas, and the albums that followed failed to demonstrate any solid songcraft beyond the group's respected singles. ~ Mike DeGagne

| | 38 Special Rockin' Into The Night CD (1980)
Strength In Numbers
$4.89 By its third album, .38 Special discovered how to fuse fun-lovin' Southern rock with a formula that would bring the band commercial attention. Even though the album failed to put a single into the Top 40, the songs gather more steam than the group's previous attempts and begin to show the talents of individual members, turning some of the attention away from the novelty of sporting two drummers. ...
| | 38 Special Wild-Eyed Southern Boys CD (1981)
Strength In Numbers
$4.99 Building on the bandmembers' own personal accomplishments that came from the Rockin' Into the Night album, .38 Special released an even stronger bunch of songs a year later with Wild-Eyed Southern Boys. Focusing on the same Southern-based rock & roll formula, the efforts from Southern Boys contain a little more guitar zing while complementing the band's ability to produce marketable radio music. "Hold on Loosely," with its smooth vocal stride, managed to peak at number 27 in April of 1981, giving .38 Special its first Top 40 single, and the title track, "Honky Tonk Dancer," and "Back Alley Sally" keep a homespun flavor alive and well, indicating that the band's Southern roots haven't been dismissed completely. Even though ...
| | 38 Special Tour De Force CD (1984)
Strength In Numbers
$5.05 .38 Special is a prime example of an AOR band with deep roots in Southern rock. The band hails from Florida, and vocalist Donnie Van Zant is the brother of none other than Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant. The group's 1982 album, Special Forces, included the flawless Top Ten rocker "Caught Up in You," which injected the mainstream with a shot of much-needed grit. That album's follow-up, 1983's Tour De Force, upped the ante, showing the band's skills at their peak. Propelled by the effortless blend of melody and power stirred up by Van Zant, vocalist/guitarist Don Barnes, guitarist Jeff Carlisi, bassist Larry Junstrom, and drummers Steve Brookins and Jack ...
| | Kansas Power CD (1986)
Strength In Numbers
$4.55 After a three-year hiatus, Kansas re-formed in 1986, signed with MCA, and released Power. The album bears virtually no resemblance to the old Kansas style; in fact, it's more hard rock and pop than prog rock, and the tough-yet-sleek opener, "Silhouettes in Disguise," immediately announces the change to listeners. "Power" was a minor hit and the simple ...
