| | Carpenters Christmas Portrait CD Carpenters Discography of CDs
(8 Customer Reviews)
Originally released in 1978 and reissued on CD in 1984, expanded with tracks from the Carpenters' second Christmas album, AN OLD FASHIONED CHRISTMAS, A CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT is an excellent traditional Christmas album. The track list features stately orchestral arrangements of classic hymns and carols such as "O Come, O Come Immanuel," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Ave Maria" alongside seasonal pop standards like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," "Sleigh Ride" and Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song."
There's even a Richard Carpenter original, the touching "Merry Christmas Darling." As always, Karen Carpenter is in excellent voice, singing with the dusky, almost melancholy style that gave all of her music a certain poignancy even before her tragic death in 1982. The original album also appeared in the import two-CD set A CHRISTMAS COLLECTION.
Additional personnel includes: Bob Messenger (tenor saxophone); Pete Morgan (acoustic bass); Joe Osborn (electric bass); Ron Tutt, Barry Morgan, Cubby O'Brien (drums).
The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter (vocals); Richard Carpenter (keyboards).

| | Barbra Streisand Love Songs CD (1986)
Christmas Portrait album
$24.45 Barbra Streisand's status as one of the most successful singers of her generation is all the more remarkable not only because her popularity has been achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend -- rock & roll -- which she did not follow; but also because, despite an amazing singing voice that has enthralled practically anyone who has heard it, she has always used singing as a mere stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director. Love Songs includes 'Memory', 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' and 'Way We Were'. Sony. 2004.
Having been a successful recording artist for nearly 20 years but finding it difficult to break through to the British market, Barbra Streisand was finally on a run of hit albums beginning with the soundtrack to A Star Is Born, which she shared with Kris Kristofferson, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, and biggest of them all, the Barry Gibb produced Guilty. CBS decided to consolidate her position as the premier female MOR singer in the world and released the album Love Songs with an extensive TV advertising campaign backing it. In the U.S. the album was released as Memories and was a ten-track compilation only, but in the U.K., Love Songs included 14 tracks with a running time of nearly one hour. It worked a treat and ended 1982 as the best-selling album overall, even beating the phenomenon of the Kids from Fame into second place. It wasn't exactly a greatest-hits collection as many of the biggest singles were missing, notably the tracks from Guilty, but with that album still on the charts at the time of the release of Love Songs, even CBS thought it may be stretching it to include tracks from that. Ignoring everything Streisand had recorded in the '60s, her major duets from the '70s are included: "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Neil Diamond and "No More Tears Enough Is Enough" with Donna Summer, as well as her solo hits "Evergreen ...
| | Helen Reddy's Greatest Hits CD (1975) Import
Christmas Portrait CD music
$9.79 In 1987, Capitol re-released this ten-song disc on CD with five additional tracks, including Helen Reddy's last three hit singles; this vinyl set contains the ten biggest tunes that built the singer's legend. Just as George Martin remixed the songs by the group America that he did not originally produce for their "best of," some of these productions feel like different mixes rather than the sound radio listeners were familiar with. It's the same voice, and the same musicians; however, "I Am Woman" has more pronounced horns, bigger drums, and Reddy's voice is clearer than on the original album. It certainly sounds like a superior mix, not what radio listeners were used to, unless the mastering job on this Greatest Hits release contains more defined mastering than the 45 rpm. There's a special thanks to producer Joe Wissert, so it is very likely he expanded the sound of the Jay Senter recording from her second album; Larry Marks' work from her debut, I Don't Know How to Love Him; and possibly some of the Tom Catalano productions as well. Hearing these ten powerful hits together is a strong argument against Reddy's detractors -- she climbed the charts with about as many songs as her friend Petula Clark, and both were embraced by adult contemporary radio. Leon Russell's "Bluebird" is absent, but the sublime Harriet Schock composition "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" is here, the last of her singles from this era to go Top Ten, and second to last adult contemporary number one. It's a brilliant tune, ...
