When Extreme first burst on the scene in 1989, glam/pop metal was all the rage, and while the band was better musically equipped than many of the other bands of the day, Extreme tried to blend into the then-hip musical climate with their self-titled debut.

Besides trying to fit in visually (just take a look at the album's cover), the quartet rely on Van Halen-esque party anthems to get their point across. The album did spawn a few songs that would find mild success on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" program (the hard-edged pop rockers "Kid Ego" and "Mutha"), but Extreme would have to wait for their next release, 1990's PORNOGRAFFITI, to obtain their commercial breakthrough.

5 stars the real guitar hero
this my friends is the real reason extreme made it big in the first place. hear the intro to mutha and tell me if this does not scream guitar hero!. even though i like silly hair metal this debut is anything but. these guys are still learning though as this is like a mini concept album about school days. i wish most of the songs will be in guitar hero but metallica already beat them to the punch. this debut is so underrated it hurts. wild rockers mixed with tender ballads mixed with the talents of nuno and his dazzling soloing. if i could name the best 80's guitar player it be: van halen, vai, satriani and nuno. get it so that you won't be playing a plastic instrument for long.

3 stars Conflicting Effort
Main problem with this album is that Extreme seem to be trying to be different and fit in at the same time. Some of the songs are so predictable it's painful, despite the unique and tasteful soloing and riffing from Nuno. Also, the lyrics in some cases are downright awful, and Gary Cherone's voice becomes grating about halfway through the album. Still, highlights like "Kid Ego" make this album a worthwhile pickup.

3 stars NYNO SHOULD BE RENAMED NUYES
EXTREME IS ONE OF THOSE BANDS THAT WAS RIGHT ON THE CUSP OF BREAKING IT HUGE-- THEY MADE IT BIG WITJ "MORE THAN WORDS," BUT NEVER QUITE BROKE THE BARRIERS LIKE METALLICA DID (THAT'S A WHOLE OTHER STORY).

5 stars Birth of a Guitar Hero!
Start to finish this one completly rocks. Nuno is not just another "metal" guitar player. He took hard rock to the next level, and this is where it started. All of these songs are fun and musically challenging. Buy this one, stick it in your car stereo and turn it way up!!

SAMMY HAGAR was rereleased on CD as I NEVER SAID GOODBYE on Geffen (24144). This album, originally released in 1987 under the title SAMMY HAGAR, was renamed for its CD release in an MTV contest. Sammy Hagar, the singer's last solo album, was released a year after his first album with Van Halen, 1986's 5150. Although it charted the highest ...

Living Sacrifice Hammering Process CD  (2000)

CD $13.49  4.7 stars Audio Samples
The dissonant, trebly guitar noodling combined with detuned sub-riffing known as nu-metal sneaks into the always-evolving aggro of Living Sacrifice on the group's sixth release, The Hammering Process. Though perhaps considered a suspicious shift by their underground metal fans, this subtle transformation works for a unit used to combining the best elements of metal's many forms into new and original concoctions. In a dramatic overhaul of their lineup, founding members Bruce Fitzhugh (vocals, guitar) and Lance Garvin (drums) are joined by three former ESO Charis members: Rocky Gray (guitar), Arthur Green (bass), and most surprisingly, drummer/percussionist Matthew Putman, whose stamp ...

Extreme Pornograffitti CD  (1990)

CD $7.25  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Extreme's self-titled 1989 debut made the Boston quartet quite a "buzz band" in the hard rock underground, but it wasn't until their sophomore release one year later, PORNOGRAFFITI, that the band scored their breakthrough hit. In the spring of '91, the lovely acoustic ballad "More than Words" was released as a single, and instantly became a smash hit (nearly a year after PORNOGRAFFITI was first released). And while they scored another hit with the similarly styled "Hole Hearted," Extreme's new pop fans must have been surprised when they heard the rest of the album, which was comprised mostly of hard rock/heavy metal tunes. The album was also the band's first stab at writing a concept album--it dealt with the media's subtle yet constant use of sex ...

Dream Theater Awake CD  (1994)

Extreme album
CD $9.39  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Dream Theater's web of metal and progressive elements comes roaring out of the speakers at full throttle like some manic coupling of Frank Zappa, Guns & Roses and Yes, a garish torrent of virtuoso chopsmanship, classical flourishes and good old fashioned nosebleed metal. With his snaking, syncopated lines, complicated rhythmic variations and crunching tone, Dream Theater's John Petrucci is a guitar hero for the '90s, and string slingers who admire the likes of Alan Holdsworth and Steve Vai will find much to admire in his unhinged extended flights on "Voices" and "Erotomania." And singer James LaBrie possesses the kind of classic tenor pipes that distinguish singers like Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Geddy Lee and Axl Rose from the rest of the pack: the kind of powerhouse squawk that can push through the guitars and keyboards--hey, you can hear him in Antarctica. The songs on AWAKE constitute a richly orchestrated suite of moods, and tend towards the kind of mystic parables and epic gestures that used to so fascinate Jimmy Page. ...

Living Sacrifice Conceived In Fire CD  (2002)

Extreme CD music
CD $13.85  4.1 stars Audio Samples
Of all the metalcore bands that have come and gone over the span of the genre's history, Living Sacrifice has remained a band who never showed a sign of weakness. This is a band who, time and time again, release superior metal albums, always providing above-average albums over their decade as a band. Many proclaimed 2000's The Hammering Process as the group's ultimate release, and, in fact, one of the genre's best offerings that year. Those who doubted Living Sacrifice had the ability to deliver an album of that magnitude ever again, much less on the heels of The Hammering Process' surprising cult success, need only listen to Conceived in Fire. Once again, Living Sacrifice have outdone themselves, serving up some of the meatiest metalcore of 2002 with confidence and style. The 13 tracks that comprise Conceived in Fire feel less like individual achievements and more like one continuous proclamation of all which is brutal. Thundering drum dominance courtesy of Lance Garvin, one of the scene's most underrated performers, spearheads an album of exquisite malevolence. This intense anger is directed in a number of ways, be it the ...

This is the second live album from Racer X, released well after the band had broken up in the late '80s. Cut from the same sonic cloth as its predecessor Live Extreme, Vol. 1, it offers more of the same over-the-top instrumental indulgences and cartoonish heavy metal sentiments of that album. For fans of the band, it features some previously unreleased originals: "Poison Eyes" and "Give It to Me" as well as a cover of Kiss' "Detroit Rock City." Production assistance is provided by GGGarth, of Rage Against the Machine and L7 fame. ~ Andy Hinds This is the second live album from Racer X, released ...
System Of A Down
System Of A Down CD  (1998) Edited

Extreme songs
CD $7.69  4 stars Audio Samples
System of a Down sees itself as being an integral part of a new musical revolution of heavy music. On the surface, the band's manifesto seems tangential to Rage Against the Machine's; but musically SOAD is a groove-metal machine, with a sound that incorporates a punk ethic, Panteraesque riffs, and a schizophrenic vocal approach reminiscent of Mike Patton. Like a dose of chicken soup for a disconnected moshing youth, SYSTEM OF A DOWN is unrelenting. "Sugar" segues from neo-jazz verses into pounding thrash-core choruses. "Spiders" shows more depth, dynamics, and even poetic, melodic vocals. The production of the ...

"Alive" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Youth Of The Nation" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Portrait" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance. Coming off its breakthrough 1999 major-label debut THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF SOUTHTOWN, P.O.D. returns with SATELLITE, a stunning follow-up whose mix of messages and musical styles puts them head-and-shoulders above their rap-metal peers. Fans get plied with crunching guitars while frontman Sonny Sandoval's rap-flavored vocals perfectly complement the band's rhythmic assault on the bare-knuckle single "Alive" and the equally brutal "Boom." Still proudly brandishing its Christian beliefs, P.O.D. bypasses proselytizing while employing arrangements that go beyond the typical nu-metal barrage. A children's choir is featured on a chiming treatise about school violence ("Youth Of The Nation"), Rage-flavored staccato riffs pepper a testimony to faith (the title track), and Sandoval's late mother is paid tribute with a gorgeous elegy overflowing with acoustic guitar, harmonies and a groove ("Thinking About Forever"). As if stylistic maturation weren't enough, P.O.D. also pays tribute to their influences via some well-executed guest ...
