Sting's most personal solo album (it was written in response to the death of his father), THE SOUL CAGES is also his most ambitious. Many of the tracks (Island of Souls", "Mad About You") verge (impressively) on classical art song territory. For some, however, the good news here is that Sting is playing bass again; his simple yet effective lines are heard to particular advantage on the upbeat pop gem "All This Time." Another high point is "Saint Agnes and the Burning Town," a flamenco-inflected instrumental tour de force unlike anything in Sting's catalogue.
Recorded at Studio Guilaume Tell, Paris, France and Villa Salviati, Migliarino, Italy.

The effect at times is a bit overwhelming, but it's gripping too, the tossing and turning of an anxious superman." Q (2/91) - 4 Stars - One of Q Magazine's 50 best albums of 1991. Stereo Review (4/91) - "...the album is not an entertainment so much as a meditation...an important work..." Soul Cages Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Dark and beautiful This is one of those albums I don't listen to daily, or weekly, but once in a while it's what is NEEDED. This album is quite possibly the best-executed album Sting has put together to date, since there is a unified tone that carries through. The lyrics themselves are beautiful, and paired with the more structured sound of the album, I can't seem to get away from the thoroughness of his self-examination. He doesn't wallow or just let himself off easily, he explores his pain carefully. It may sound methodical, and it is, but in the best way possible. A kind of grateful and appreciative cartharsis is what I always walk away with.

What A Great Album! I love this album, it is so good....The title song is my favorite, but "All This Time" and "Why Should I Cry For You" are great too...It makes me wish I had met Sting's father, he must have been a heck of a guy to inspire such great songs. Soul Cages
$12.59 Sting had a lot to prove on his first post-Police effort, and he proved himself up to the task of establishing a distinctive identity as a solo artist. Instead of replicating his reggae-tinged Police style, he ventured into new realms, hiring top drawer American jazz musicians like Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and drum monster Omar Hakim to accompany him on the kind of harmonically sophisticated (though decidedly non-jazz) tunes he'd begun working on towards the end of the Police's lifetime (see SYNCHRONICITY). There's still a touch of reggae on the open-hearted "Love Is the Seventh Wave," and even a funked-up version of the formerly abstract Police tune "Shadows In The Rain," but most of the tunes here (except the pop smash "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" are the kind of literate, adult-friendly sophisto-pop that would become a template for his subsequent ...

$12.59 Sting's double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis's arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"). The songs are a generally varied lot, ranging from a tribute to victims of repression in Argentina ("They Dance Alone") to a tongue-in-cheek, sort-of-reggae tribute to famous eccentric Quentin Crisp ("An Englishman in New York"). The sort-of-funk "We'll Be Together"(originally written for a Japanese beer commercial) is the most upbeat and pop-ish thing here, and was deservedly a hit single, although Sting now disdains it.

Soul Cages
$12.59 BRAND NEW DAY won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "Brand New Day" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Performance.
BRAND NEW DAY continues Sting's sophisticated approach toward pop music as he once again collaborates with ace musicians on material that knows no cultural or stylistic boundaries. Not surprisingly, the tantric guru chooses love as the theme for this eclectic collection of songs.
Sting's cross-cultural forays range from a collaboration with Algerian singing sensation Cheb Mami on the Ofra Haza-meets-William Orbit "Desert Rose" to the bossa nova-influenced "Big Lie Small World." There's a jazz patina throughout--guest trumpeter Chris Botti emulates Miles Davis on the coffee-house hip-bop of "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" and long-time friend Branford Marsalis adds mournful clarinet to the sumptuous string arrangements of the noirish "Tomorrow We'll See," a song about a weary prostitute straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. Although ...

$12.05 "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male; and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES won the 1994 Grammy Award for Engineered Album, Nonclassical. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" was also nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year; and TEN SUMMONER'S TALES was nominated for Album Of The Year.
Mr. "Sheer Profundity" delivered a stunning fourth solo album that probably surprised himself as well as the critics who were prepared to watch his fall from grace after the seeming failure of the intense THE SOUL CAGES. Right from the opener, "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," the album holds its pace. That track will be seen as a classic in years to come, as will the beautiful "Fields Of Gold" and "Shape Of My Heart." Sting is established as a major artist with a solo career that has now eclipsed his former supergroup.
Recorded at Lake House, Wiltshire, England.
