(3 Customer Reviews)
The Carpenters' radio-friendly soft rock virtually defined the genre in the early 1970s, and this album--their third full-length--was the group's ace card. Following on the heels of the wildly successful CLOSE TO YOU, CARPENTERS features more breezy melodies marked by rich arrangements and beautiful lead vocals, courtesy of siblings Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter, respectively.
The record is most notable for two of the duo's strongest and best-loved singles. "Rainy Days and Mondays," written by soft-pop gods Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, is a bittersweet pop masterpiece fleshed out by Richard's string orchestrations and smoothly produced backing vocals, while Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett's "Superstar," from its melancholic verse to its dramatic chorus, is equally hard to resist. (Both songs showcase Karen's sultry alto.) The rest of the album includes Richard's bubble-gum pop originals, another Williams-Nichols tune ("Let Me Be the One"), and a medley of Burt Bacharach-Hal David tunes. Even more commercially streamlined than its predecessors, CARPENTERS is a classic of early-'70s pop.

Rolling Stone (6/24/71, p.43) - "...Ultimately the Carpenters have more going for them than against. Carpenters album
$6.85 Karen and Richard Carpenter's third album, released in 1970, includes two of their signature songs, Bacharach/David's "(They Long To Be) Close To You" and Paul Williams' "We've Only Just Begun," a tune originally written as a commercial jingle for California's Crocker Banks. The rest of the album continues the siblings' exquisite taste in outside material, returning to Williams for "I Kept On Loving You" and to Bacharach for the Shirelles' "Baby It's You." Also featured here is an appealing version of the classic "I'll Never Fall In Love Again."
Other fine covers include Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" and an arrestingly mournful version of Lennon/McCartney's "Help." The album also includes four Richard Carpenter originals, with "Another Song" and the girl-groupish "Maybe It's You" the highlights. CLOSE TO YOU is one of the Carpenters' most commercially and artistically successful albums.

| | Carpenters Song For You CD (1972) Remastered
Carpenters CD music
$7.79 A SONG FOR YOU, Karen and Richard Carpenter's fourth album, is an unusual record. Alongside the usual million-selling hits, here including "Top of the World," "Hurting Each Other," "Goodbye To Love," and the film theme "Bless The Beasts And Children," A SONG FOR YOU contains a number of brief instrumentals designed to showcase Richard Carpenter's keyboard and arranging skills. Elsewhere, sibling Karen sings as beautifully as ever, and her dusky, clear alto is at its most expressive. The CD was remastered by Richard Carpenter in 1998 as part of a general overhaul of the Carpenters' A&M catalogue. A limited-edition Japanese release features 32-bit digital remastering and an LP-style slipcase.
Additional personnel includes: Louie Shelton, Tony Peluso (guitar); Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Bob Messenger (tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute); Tim Weisberg (bass flute); Earl Dumler (oboe, English horn); Norm Herzberg (bassoon); Joe Osborn (bass); Hal Blaine (drums).

| | Carpenters Now And Then CD (1973) Remastered
Carpenters music CDs
$7.85 Featuring a surprisingly poignant cover photo of a suburban house--not unlike the Downey, California homestead in which Karen and Richard Carpenter grew up--NOW AND THEN is a concept album about the music that inspired Karen and Richard in their childhood. Besides the hit single "Sing" and a charming take on Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," the centerpiece of NOW AND THEN is Richard Carpenter and John Bettis' nostalgic "Yesterday Once More.
The song opens and closes a side-long medley of early-'60s pop hits that includes the Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun," Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" and Jan and Dean's "Deadman's Curve." Also included are Shelly Fabares' "Johnny Angel," Bobby Vee's "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes," Ruby and the Romantics' "Our Day Will Come," and the Chiffons' "One Fine Day." Given Karen's immense skills as an interpretive singer, not one of the covers is less than interesting, and most are flat-out wonderful.

| | Carpenters Horizon CD (1975) Remastered
Carpenters songs
$6.49 This 1975 album is one of Karen and Richard Carpenter's best. A languorous cover of The Eagles' "Desperado" and a version of the Marvelettes' classic "Please Mr. Postman" display the duo's impressive interpretive skills. But the songwriting team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis wrote most of the album. This pairing had already proven themselves with hits like "Top of the World," "Yesterday Once More," and "Goodbye To Love." The Carpenters' most successful track on HORIZON was the enormous hit "Only Yesterday." Richard's orchestrations and arrangements here are among his best, and of course sister Karen is in excellent voice throughout, her melancholy, dusky alto sounding as pure and warm as ever.

Carpenters album
$15.99 Originally released as 2 separate albums, CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT and AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS.

Purists should note that the 1984 release was completed after Karen's 1982 death and is comprised of outtakes from the 1978 recording sessions and instrumental performances (including selections from The Nutcracker Suite) performed by Richard Carpenter. Highlights of the set include traditional hymns and carols, Christmas pop standards and other seasonal tunes. Perhaps the set's highlight is Karen's wistful yet sultry rendition of Johnny Mercer's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?"

| | Carpenters As Time Goes By CD (2001)
Carpenters CD music
$12.59 The trademark sound that made the Carpenters one of the highest charting and most beloved pop acts of the 1970s is in full effect on this collection of outtakes, demos, and live performances. The quirky compilation is threaded together by infectious melodic hooks, Karen Carpenter's evocative alto, and her brother Richard's clean, lush arrangements, all of which sound as crisp and appealing as they did in their heyday.
Excerpts from the Carpenters television specials are a key inclusion here. A medley of the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and STAR WARS movie themes, covers of "I Got Rhythm" and "You're Just in Love," and a stylized version of the 1929 standard "Without a Song" are just a few of the rarities. AS TIME GOES BY also features other pop and rock covers ("Nowhere Man," "Dancing in the Street") that are placed alongside technical experiments (a double-tracked duet between Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter). For good measure, this disc includes medleys of the Carpenters' own hits (one blends slow versions of "Superstar" and "Rainy Days and Mondays"). Even on these truncated renditions, Karen's voice pushes all the right vocal buttons and pulls the heartstrings. AS TIME GOES BY will please fans of the band's sound, and is an especially welcome treat for the world's Carpenterphiles.

| | Johnnie Ray Cry CD (1990) (Import) Germany
Carpenters music CDs
$21.29 Like most of those popular singers who peaked in the period just before rock & roll emerged as a dominant force in music, Johnnie Ray has been neglected -- his own record label, Columbia, has issued a few hits compilations in varying degrees of completeness, which seems to be mostly what the U.S. market will support. But Germany's Bear Family Records has stepped out in front with a string of releases of Ray's catalog that started with this single CD and culminated with a similarly named box set. This 30-song collection has surprisingly little overlap with Columbia's 16 Most Requested Songs, so those already owning the latter will not have to concern themselves too deeply with that issue. Not all of the hits are here, by any means, but many of Ray's most interesting single sides are present, along with two previously unissued tracks. The sound is amazing, given the limited fidelity of many Columbia releases dating from across the same period, and anyone with doubts about Ray's versatility will get a first-hand look at his R&B and jazz influences, albeit not necessarily in their most commercially successful forms, and also the raw power of his voice -- additionally, numbers such as "Yes, Tonight Josephine" show how Ray did, indeed, keep himself competitive in the rock & roll era; it might not have the beat, but Ray's singing had the kind of edge that characterized some of the better pop-style efforts in that direction of the period. Also included are duets that he cut with Frankie Laine and Doris Day. The collection is well-annotated by Peter Grendysa, who gives a superb account of Ray's overall career. The only complaint one might have over the material is the producers' failure to follow even a minimal chronological order -- the songs jump all over the map across nine years of recording, which makes it a great showcase for Ray's range and depth, if not the evolution of his career and sound. ~ Bruce Eder

His version of "My Favorite Things" from THE SOUND OF MUSIC concisely expresses the joyousness of long winter nights and the anticipation of splendid gifts.
Williams outdoes himself on "Winter Wonderland," releasing felicitous passion as he lets out a temperate scat to finish the song. Few popular crooners can give such a natural and reverent rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful." The CHRISTMAS COLLECTION is a testament to Andy Williams' tonal fidelity as well as his near-sacred sincerity.
