| | Joe Cocker With A Little Help From My Friends CD Joe Cocker Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Principally recorded at Olympic and Trident Studios, London, England in 1968.
Joe Cocker's debut built on the promise of the title track, a hit single the previous year, which had introduced the world to the singer's astonishing blues rasp of a voice and remains to this day one of the finest Beatles cover versions committed to vinyl. The vocal pyrotechnics of that song are muted on the rest of the album, with Cocker demonstrating his fine handling of more subtle material such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" and "I Shall Be Released." Backed by his own seasoned Grease Band and session players Jimmy Page and Steve Winwood, Cocker sings with a soulful intensity that shone all too briefly during his wayward career.
Originally released on A&M Records (3109).
Includes liner notes by J.P. Bean.

Q (7/00, p.130) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Good...establishing the formula with some majestic blue-eyed soul that swaggers all the way from 'Just Like A Woman' to an unlikely 'Bye Bye Blackbird'.... Reappraisal is long overdue. Now remastered, here's the ideal opportunity."" If you could only have one Joe Cocker this would be it--or pretty close to it!! A great CD. Submitted by bobpar1120 (Haddonfield, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Just a most fantastic maniac. There are some really nice tunes on this disc, not the least of which is the title track. I always did like this version better than Ringo's. Ringo was tepid and trite while J.C. really revs that tune and shoots it with a little soul for his friends. And with an interesting cast of friends, including Jimmy Page, minor contributions by Steve Winwood, and soon would be former McCartney Wings man, Henry McCullough early in his fiteen minutes.
The band really cooks on Cocker's rendition of the old Dave Mason/Traffic tune "Feeling Alright". Interestingly, Windwood is not present on this, one of the high points of the disc, old cover tune. I guess, between Traffic's many versions, Mason's solo versions, the Dead, Cocker and, yes the grand-daddy of the power trios, Grand Funk, "Feeling Alright" became fair game for every garage band in throughout the 1970's and early 1980's.
There is an interesting Jimmy Page solo on "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Marjorine" features Page and Albert Lee. As well on the bonus track, "Something's Coming On". An oddly interesting duo. I guess they are letting Page do most of the soloing, but some of the guitar playing is pretty good.
Unfortunately, many of the tunes do not hold up. They just don't seem as fresh and vital as they may have in 1968. Cocker's version of "I Shall Be Released" does not hold a candle (for me) to the Band's version on "Music From Big Pink". Still, the title track and "Feeling Alright" in 24-bit are worth 10 more bucks. I had an early 16-bit Cocker master on the A&M Classics series but the sound was really thin. It's amazing what 8 more bits can do for the wave conversion. The original artwork packaging and the expanded liner notes are a short interesting look at the maniac behind the myth that is Joe Cocker. With A Little Help From My Friends CD music
$15.15 Although not on par with his best albums (1977's Over, 1978's The Future Now, etc.), this solo debut, Fool's Mate, shows Van der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill taking his first steps toward later prog rock perfection. What makes Fool's Mate different than VdGG's material is that it's more mainstream, and for the most part, piano and acoustic guitar-based. But Hammill is still able convey the grandness of classic VdGG, as heard in the sweeping sounds of "Re-Awakening." And Hammill never grows predictable. The tracks "Sunshine" and "Imperial Zeppelin" show that he doesn't take himself as seriously as many of his ...
