In "Sitting," for example, the singer is dogged by thoughts of stagnation and mortality while a chiming, minstrel-esque keyboard riff plays in the background. The somber mood is heightened by some hushed acoustic guitar-driven numbers ("Boy with a Moon and Star on His Head") and some stark piano ballads ("Sweet Scarlet"). The fact that Stevens was experimenting more with styles, arrangements, and dynamics here may have given some fans pause, yet his trademark charm is still in evidence, as is the dependable strength of his songwriting.
Cat Stevens began to taper off the winning streak he'd scored with TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN and TEASER AND THE FIRECAT on this 1972 release. CATCH BULL AT FOUR still fared well commercially, yet it lacked the focus and immediate appeal of its predecessors. Still, the album showed Stevens's remarkable talent for writing insightful, moving lyrics and memorable, infectious melodies. Aside from the exuberantly joyous "I Can't Keep It In," the mood of CATCH BULL AT FOUR is a bit darker and edgier.
Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, acoustic guitar, Spanish guitar, electric mandolin, pennywhistle, piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer, drums, percussion); Alun Davies (acoustic guitar, Spanish guitar); Andreas Toumazis (bouzouki); Del Newman (strings); Jean Roussel (piano, organ); Alan James (bass instrument); Gerry Conway (drums); Linda Lewis, C.S. Choir (background vocals).

Cat Stevens Catch Bull At Four Songs Catch Bull At Four Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Cat moves forward Not just the same as the past two albums. Cat grows and expands. OK, But................ This CD was ok, but the first 3 are his very best. Some tracks are not as stimulating as with his first 3 cd's. But all and all a decent cd to own.
I rest my case. Submitted by Johnny (I live in a van down by the river) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

cd is good but... One of cat's last great album. "BUT" when I placed the order with cd universe, it said on their page that I was ordering the "limited edition" digipak but instead received the plain cd in the plastic case. Be careful when buying from them, you might not get what you ordered and paid for. Submitted by mzarro19 (Voorhees, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Catch Bull At Four album
$6.49 Although the quality of the songwriting here does not quite match what Stevens would achieve on his following releases, it is strong nonetheless, and goes a good length toward establishing his trademark sound. Of particular note is Stevens' voice: a rich, variable baritone that he exploits on MONA BONE JAKON to excellent effect. The results--warm, intimate, and immediately appealing--put Stevens in the running with the best singer-songwriters of the early '70s, and paved the way ...
| | Cat Stevens Tea For The Tillerman CD (1970) Remastered
Catch Bull At Four CD music
$10.45 Digitally remastered by Bill Levenson (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN is one of Cat Stevens's finest albums, and a gem in the crown of early 1970s singer/songwriterdom. Stevens manages to have his cake and eat it too, simultaneously achieving pop accessibility and artistic relevance. While inviting rhythms (buoyed by Stevens's dynamic acoustic strumming) and pop hooks abound, the feel is decidedly gentle and spare. Apart from the occasional string section, Stevens is accompanied only by a three-piece band as he sings his introspective lyrics with appreciable fervor.
While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable moments come when Stevens's lyrics venture further afield. ...

Catch Bull At Four songs
$6.49 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Between 1970 and 1972, Cat Stevens recorded four albums in the same manner, using the same producer and many of the same musicians, painting the album covers, and assigning the records ponderous titles. Things changed with his next album, Foreigner. The recording itself had been produced by Stevens, and while a couple of Stevens' usual backup musicians had been retained, New York session musicians appeared, and second guitarist Alun Davies was gone. With him went the acoustic guitar interplay that had been the core of Stevens' sound, replaced by more elaborate keyboard-based arrangements complete with strings, brass, and a female vocal trio featuring Patti Austin. It's easy to look at the 18-plus minute "Foreigner Suite" that took up the first side and accuse Stevens of excess and indulgence. What should be kept in mind, however, is that his peers in 1973 were acts like Jethro Tull and Yes, who in turn were taking their cue from the Beatles' Abbey Road and the Who's Tommy. Call Foreigner ambitious, then, rather than indulgent. Actually, the suite is full of compelling melodic sections and typically emotive singing that could have made for ...
| | Cat Stevens Buddha & The Chocolate Box CD (1974) Remastered
Catch Bull At Four album
$7.75 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
While Foreigner was Cat Stevens' fifth consecutive gold album and his fourth straight Top Ten hit, it actually marked a small drop commercially and encountered critical resistance for the lengthy suite that took up all of side one. Eight months later, Buddha and the Chocolate Box found Stevens back in England and back with producer Paul Samwell-Smith and second guitarist Alun Davies. It also marked a return to the simpler style of earlier albums. No song ran much over five minutes, the arrangements were sparer and featured more acoustic guitar, and the lyrics did not take off into discursive ruminations about the state of the universe. It was very much as if Stevens was deliberately trying to make an album like Teaser and the Firecat, his commercial and artistic apex. Having begun the album ...
