Brotherhood
$14.29 As satanic as anything need be, Cradle of Filth are a black metal ensemble from Suffolk, England, who've managed to keep it extreme, while being wildly popular internationally. They may be the most popular black metal band in the world because they've managed to break away from the genre's relatively small cult following and successfully infect all sorts of disaffected teenagers, especially in Europe. They never veer drastically from the usual black metal staples: movie monster-type vocals, lots of high-pitched screams, indecipherable lyrics, and relentless, punishing riffs. But Midian has its fair share of melody too. (Most of the finest metal does have some element of melody.) The album begins with a chorus of what sounds like some evil monks chanting and is at its very best when the ominous, classical-style ...
| | S O S Band Best Of The S.O.S. Band CD (1995)
Brotherhood
$11.05 (saxophone, keyboards, vocals); Abdul Raoof (trumpet, flugelhorn,
percussion); Jason "T.C." Bryant (keyboards, vocals); John Alexander
Simpson (bass, vocals); James Earl Jones III (drums, vocals); Jerome "JT"
All songs written by James Harris III and Terry Lewis except "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" (Harold Clayton/Sigidi) and "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair?" (Jason Bryant).
Like all greatest-hits or best-of compilations, this one is missing some key ingredients, namely "S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dat Dat Dat Dit Dit Dit)" and "Just the Way You Like It." Since the band didn't record tons of material and was only active a short time, the omissions are hard to fathom. It's not like they didn't have room on the CD; only ten songs are compiled here. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are well represented with eight songs. Despite the omissions, this is still good listening. Mary Davis' vocals ...
| | Last Dragon CD (1985) Remastered
Brotherhood
$6.65 Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Mastering Studios East, Edison, New Jersey).
East met West for 1985's action-packed The Last Dragon (or Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon, depending on how you want to look at it), a vehicle for Gordy's Motown label that employed Vanity in a lead role as popular veejay Laura Charles, the object of affection for Taimak's talented martial arts hero character Leroy (or "Bruce Leroy," as he was respectfully referred to). ...

| | Norman Simmons Synthesis CD (2002)
Brotherhood
$13.85 Norman Simmons is known for his terrific piano playing, backing singers like Joe Williams and Carmen McRae, but he has recorded sporadically as a leader. This 2002 studio session for Savant is a long overdue chapter in Simmons' golden years, showcasing his talent as a composer and arranger as well. With rising ...
| | Here Comes Louis Smith CD (1957) (Import) Japan
Brotherhood
$23.65 Trumpeter Louis Smith was an exciting up-and-coming hard bop player in the 1950's, released two excellent discs on Blue Note, but then went into teaching. (He re-emerged in 1978, recording for Steeplechase Records.) HERE COMES. is, naturally, his debut, and he was accompanied by what turned out to be jazz royalty: Cannonball Adderely, known here as Buckshot La Funke (due to contractual obligations), alto sax; Tommy Flanagan and Duke Jordan alternated on piano, and Art Taylor and Doug Watkins headed up the rhythm section. Smith is firmly in the continuum of bop brass-masters Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, and most of HERE is his originals.
Louis Smith had a brilliant debut on this Blue Note album, his first of two before becoming a full-time teacher. The opener (Duke Pearson's "Tribute to Brownie") was a perfect piece for Smith ...
