Orff: Catulli Carmina
$15.05 One of the clear standouts of the extensive LIVE AT NEWPORT series recorded at the legendary Newport Folk Festival throughout the '60s, JUDY COLLINS LIVE AT NEWPORT is also one of the finest documents there is of a masterful singer during an under-appreciated phase of her career. In retrospect, it can be hard to realize how refreshing Judy Collins' deep, clear, yet conversational voice was to the early '60s folk scene.
Judy Collins could take the hoariest of traditional ballads or most-covered hootenanny standard and make it sound brand new, something she does over and over again on this 14 track collection of live performances recorded between 1959 and 1966. If all you know of the Collins oeuvre is "Send in the Clowns," prepare to be amazed.
Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island between 1959 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin.
This is part of the Newport Folk Festival Classics series.
Personnel: Judy Collins (vocals, guitar); Theodore Bikel (vocals); Steve Mandell, Eric Weissberg (guitar); Bill Lee (acoustic bass).

| | Dick Gaughan Different Kind Of Love Song CD (1983)
Orff: Catulli Carmina
$12.05 The sound of this import CD is stellar. There is a chilling song, "Prisoner 562," a song to make you "think again." I can't fault a thing on this one. Buy it. ~ Chip Renner
Originally released on a small German label in 1983 and reissued with two bonus tracks by Appleseed, "A Different Kind of Love Song" is a coveted favorite among fans of Dick Gaughan, the singer-songwriter-guitarist sometimes called "the Scottish Woody Guthrie." The material is mostly topical in nature, as usual, and the title song directly responds to uninitiated listeners' complaints that "all I sing of is trouble" with the reply, "For me to help make the most people happy/I must make you even more sad and angry now...If you listen again, you might even find/All the songs I sing are love songs/But their love is a different kind."The love of which Gaughan sings on most of the CD's songs is a love of independence and human rights, a freedom from fear, whether the songs are his own ("Revolution," "Think Again," "By the People," and the title track) or by friends and mentors such as Ewan MacColl ("The Father's Song"), Peggy Seeger ("Song of Choice") and Leon Rosselson ("Stand Up for Judas," "The World Turned Upside Down"). Perhaps the most surprising cover version is a Celticized take on Joe South's "Games People Play."Among Gaughan's accompanists on this CD are bassist Dave Pegg (of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull), Scottish vocalist/actress Judy Sweeney, and keyboardist Bob Lenox.Bio:Born in Leith, Scotland, in 1948, Dick Gaughan was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels, both Scots and Irish, which provide the foundation for everything he does. Playing guitar since the age of seven, Gaughan recorded his first of many solo albums in 1971. He was also an early member of the Boys of the Lough, served with the Scottish folk-rock group Five Hand Reel and, in the early '90s, founded the short-lived but extraordinary Clan Alba. Gaughan is deeply committed to fightin

| | Simplemente Clasicos Momentos De Pasión CD (2003)
Orff: Catulli Carmina
$7.99 Momentos de Pasión is a relatively brief instrumental recording featuring trumpet, coronet, flügelhorn, and piano. While its name might suggest otherwise, this release is essentially a relaxation record. From its pristine cover art to the overdubbed (and overdone) nature sounds that accompany the performances, Momentos de Pasión wants very badly to be a soothing collection of new age-inspired noodling. Unfortunately, its performances are too spare, while its thunder and rain is too much. From the opening "Too Much" through "Horizon" and finally to "Sand Dune," the gaps between the piano, horns, and smattering rain are too obvious. The album ends up sounding like some talented musicians riffing on old standards in a practice room, as the crashing rain from a nearby thunderstorm reverberates off of skylights. It's not passionate, nor is it relaxing. The album might offer fans of the horns highlighted here something to listen for. But other than that, Momentos de Pasión is all wet. ~ Johnny Loftus
