Driving While Black... is Bennie Maupin's first album as a leader in 20 years. Maupin, who is famous for his bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and for being a member of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, teamed up with Patrick Gleeson, who introduced Hancock to synthesizers and worked on the Apocalypse Now soundtrack (1979). They have produced an album which skillfully blends '70s fusion and '90s acid jazz: Gleeson's funky hip-hop beats sound fresh and up to date, while his usage of analog synths (listen to the beautiful Fender Rhodes sound) breathes '70s air. Maupin's saxophone playing is powerful and strong on improvisation; this is particularly nice to hear since Maupin's '90s record appearances have been, for the most part, surprisingly weak. The Whitfield/Strong-penned "Smiling Faces" is the catchiest track; originals include the funky "Bank Float," "Vutu," and "The Work," which veers into drum'n'bass territory. The best track, however, is "Miles to Go," where Maupin shows that he's still one of the best bass clarinet players around; his screaming and squealing through Gleeson's synth washes is probably his best performance (on record) in years. Another nice surprise is on "In re: Nude Orbit," where the famous Random Resonator which opened Hancock's Sextant (1973), on which Gleeson worked, can be heard. While both performers on this disc are in top form, some of the tracks might seem a bit unfocused at times, but at repeated listenings, this actually might turn out as a plus. Note: Techno Animal did a remix of the track "Miles to Go," which can be found on the compilation Macro Dub Infection Volume 2 -- the Maupin/Gleeson duo is credited as "Magnet" on this disc. ~ Christian Genzel

Driving While Black album
$9.58 While performing at England's Rainbow Theater on December 10, 1971, Frank Zappa sustained a serious injury when an overzealous fan pushed him off the stage. Zappa was forced to keep a low profile while recovering from this traumatic event, but he was in the middle of a very fertile recording period--his classic albums HOT RATS, BURNT WEENY SANDWICH, and CHUNGA'S REVENGE had all recently been released. Instead of moping around, Zappa immersed himself in writing new music, and 1972's WAKA/JAWAKA was his first album to appear since his accident.
Although not as instantly rewarding as the aforementioned HOT RATS, WAKA/JAWAKA is still a solid Zappa album. Like its predecessors, ...

| | Chris Potter Gratitude CD (2001)
Driving While Black music CDs
$12.35 Saxophonist Chris Potter honors the legacy of some of jazz's greats on Gratitude, his debut for Verve. The award-winning virtuoso and composer is compelling on his tributes to John Coltrane, Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker, and several other legendary saxophonists. Gratitude contains nine original compositions written by Potter, who plays tenor saxophone on the majority of the songs, switches to soprano saxophone on "Eurydice," his tribute to Wayne Shorter, and plays the alto saxophone and Chinese wood flute on "Star Eyes," the tribute to Charlie Parker. Chris Potter is outstanding on bass clarinet on his composition "The Visitor" for Lester Young and captures the ambience that reflects the ...
| | Flora Purim That's What She Said CD (1977)
Driving While Black songs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (2001 Fantasy Studios).
Toward the close of her Milestone years, Flora Purim teamed up with producer/keyboardist George Duke -- and the imprint of Duke, then entering his funkified "Dukey Stick" period, is heavy enough to dominate the record. Very often, Duke uses his then rhythm section of bassist Byron Miller (alternating with Alphonso Johnson) and drummer Ndugu Chandler to give the grooves a definite '70s funk feel -- and percussionist Airto adapts his talents seamlessly to this way of life. Duke's electronic keyboard arsenal is all over the record, occasionally going gonzo on the Moog synthesizer, draping a then-still-fashionable ARP string synthesizer over the landscape, comping on ...
| | Flora Purim Sings Milton Nascimento CD (2002)
Driving While Black album
$13.25 Studios, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Includes liner notes by Flora Purim.
The title of the disc implies that the acclaimed Brazilian vocal legend is simply paying tribute to her old friend Milton (who happens to be one of that country's most influential songwriting masters), but she prefers to see it as "a declaration of unconditional love." With the beautiful musical backing of an all-star cast featuring George Duke, saxman and flutist Widor Santiago, and her drummer/percussionist husband Airto Moreira, Flora Purim creates a lush valentine that can be appreciated by more than Brazilian music fans. "Maria Tres Filos" has an hypnotic tribal quality, with her ethereal vocals soaring ...

| | Sham 69 Punk Singles Collection 1977-80 CD (1998) (Import) Canada
Driving While Black songs
$17.39 Sham 69, one of the leading lights of Britain's late-'70s Oi movement, turned the anti-authoritarian punk of the Clash and Sex Pistols into a blunt instrument of savage grace and blue-collar sociopolitical power. Like many of the great Oi bands, Sham 69 preached an often-misunderstood message of peace and unity. The hooligan element of the bands' following mistook the football chant choruses and raucous power chords of such songs as "Hurry Up Harry" and "Borstal Breakout" as expressions of ignorant proletarian violence.
A closer listen reveals the almost hippie-like message of Sham 69's music. "If the Kids Are United" may have a march-like cadence best suited to stomping jackboots, but the lyrics are a plea for old-fashioned peace and love; "understand him, he'll understand you, for you are him ...
| | Rose Tattoo CD (1978) (Import) Import; Australia
Driving While Black album
$16.39 If AC/DC are the greatest blue-collar hard rock band of all time, then Rose Tattoo (also Australian, also managed by the Vanda and Young team) just may qualify as the world's greatest blue-collar punk rock band. Led by impetuous, diminutive frontman Angry Anderson (the Ronnie James Dio of punk?) and the brilliant slide-guitar work of Peter Wells, Rose Tattoo were a mean and not-so-lean gang of tattooed misfits, all of them veterans of the hard as nails Aussie pub rock scene -- in short, the kind of guys you'd cross the street to avoid. Released in 1978, their eponymous debut (issued in Europe as Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw almost two years later) is a dangerous, unpredictable, monster ...
