In the ever-expanding school of teenage artists, Monica proves to be far ahead of her classmates. Toni Braxton-like vocals impress her adult audience, while the ghetto-driven music keeps her connected to her peers. Debuting with MISS THANG, Monica seizes the ground that other R&-wanna-B singers have barely trod.
MISS THANG breathed life back into the career-breaking smash single, "Don't Take It Personal." The album includes both that song and its remix, which combines the hit with Monica's interpretation of Jermaine Jackson's song of the same name. And while some seem to overdose on remakes, Monica keeps the covers to just one, the S.O.S. Band's "Tell Me If You Still Care." Although MISS THANG is colored with timeless ballads such as the Stacy Lattisaw-esque "Before You Walk Out Of My Life," songs like "Angel" show that Monica is also capable of a '90's sound. Her producers, including such prominent hit-makers as Dallas Austin, SoulShock, Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson, combine smooth grooves with brief elements of hip-hop. "Let's Straighten It Out," a duet with Usher that was originally recorded for the PANTHER soundtrack, is musically reminiscent of old-school R&B and sports a chorus from an old Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth song. Backed by Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Management, Monica promises to keep you tuned to all 16 cuts of MISS THANG.

Miss Thang album
$6.95 Adding their voices to the recent vocal group bonanza is Xscape--also known as Tocha, Tamika, Tiny and Kandi--four ladies from Atlanta with a good feel for a slow groove. This is classic, slow R&B, done in the style of After 7 and Boyz II Men. But in this case it's the women who are getting their say. Backed by some solid studio musicians, and with some first-rate songs, Xscape displays their versatility, their soul, and above all, a knack for creating sensuous music.
"Hard To Say Goodbye" is a good example of what Xscape does best. A solo voice starts out things with a sultry, no-nonsense proclamation of love. Then Tamika adds her strong alto to the mix, and the rest of the group kicks in with some luxurious harmonizing. The whole groove gets wrapped up with some super-slick production, and you've pretty much got the Xscape sound summed up. Musically, the group keeps things low and mellow. Guitars are rounded at the edges, never abrasive, but the keyboard tracks are always just spare ...

$6.15 Brandy was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The single "Baby" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Brandy Norwood, the teen television actress on "Thea," began making waves in the pop world with her debut album BRANDY and her Top 10 single "I Wanna Be Down." The album is young, bubbly, and even sexy. Brandy's soul-touched R&B sound mixes sweetly with her jazz-inflected flourishes. Her themes are the concerns of any 15-year old. The midtempo "I Wanna Be Down" deals with teenage desire, "I Dedicate" pays tribute to her musical inspirations and her family, "Best Friend" is a paean to her brother (also a television actor), and "Give Me You" is a piano-driven, upbeat religious affirmation, effectively showcasing her gospel roots.
Her strong voice is more than competent enough to handle the sometimes tricky musical changes. She often displays ...

$6.15 NEVER SAY NEVER was nominated for a 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "The Boy Is Mine" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best R&B Song. "Almost Doesn't Count" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump, Brandy delivers a fresh-sounding, well- crafted second album that sounds as much like pop as it does R&B. NEVER SAY NEVER features a song, "Have You Ever?," that was written by mega-songstress Diane Warren and produced by super-producer David Foster. The lead single, "The Boy is Mine" is a duet with fellow R&B'er Monica. Keeping up with the trend of big-time collaborations, multi-platinum rapper Mase makes an appearance on "Top of the World," which seems custom made for jeep jockeys.
