Widely and appropriately considered the masterpiece of Judy Collins' '70s pop albums, 1975's JUDITH is both an artistic success and a commercial triumph. This album's single, a sensitive, piano-based reading of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns," was a surprise hit which to this day evokes memories of mid-'70s AM radio for anyone old enough to remember.
The rest of the album, perhaps surprisingly, is up to that same level of quality. The opening, a low-key version of Jimmy Webb's oft-covered "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," is spectacular, and other covers, like Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans" and the Rolling Stones' "Salt of the Earth"--which works much better than you might think--showcase various aspects of Collins' remarkable interpretive facility. Unlike many albums of the era, the production does not feel particularly dated. JUDITH is a fine example of mid-'70s adult contemporary pop.
Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York.

Judith album
$5.95 From its nude cover photos to the presence of assorted Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan/California rock session musicians, 1979's HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS just screams tasty late-'70s lifestyle music. If you're looking for the folkie Judy of the early '60s, you won't find her here.
However, dated though it sounds in spots, HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS is nowhere near the travesty Collins' folkie-diehard fans claim it is. Collins' voice is typically strong, and it meshes with the smooth arrangements quite well. The gently loping country-rock title track and a stellar reading of Randy Newman's "Marie"--one of the few Newman covers which gets to the cynicism at the heart of so many of his songs--are magnificent, and her nuanced interpretation of Stephen Sondheim's ...

Judith music CDs
$14.65 Originally released in 1999, then re-released by new label Projekt the following year, Moon Oppose Moon, the band's full debut, shows lead member Michael Laird and his range of collaborators -- some of whom left before the album first appeared -- dedicated to the possibilities of melancholy, elegant gloom. That Laird names such bands as Dead Can Dance and In Gowan Ring as his favorites isn't surprising upon giving Moon a listen, but his choice of groups like Sepultura and Weekend shows that there's a broader appreciation at play. Add in the wide range of influences the others in the band -- keyboardist Natalia ...
