Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, dulcimer, piano); Robben Ford (electric guitar); Tom Scott (reeds, wind); Larry Nash (piano); Max Bennett (bass instrument); John Guerin (drums, percussion). Like most live albums, this two-record set was a profit-taking release on which the artist re-presented many of her old songs for a new acceptance now that she had a larger pop audience. Backed by the pop-jazz ensemble the L.A. Express Mitchell reprised the best from her first five albums, pointedly ignoring Court and Spark, and including two new cuts, "Love or Money" and "Jericho." ~ William Ruhlmann A 1974 live effort recorded with backing band The L.A. Express, MILES OF AISLES consists of fairly straightforward versions of songs from the Canadian songstress's first five (pre COURT AND SPARK) albums. Although the record includes some soulful, Santana-esque lead guitar work from Robben Ford, and an extremely tight rhythm section, the best tracks are the ones where Mitchell is accompanied only by her own acoustic guitar or piano. In this setting Mitchell is better able, both vocally and emotionally, to navigate the subtle peaks and valleys of her early material. Standout tracks include a surprisingly (considering how many times she must have had to sing it, even in 1974) heartfelt and sensitive version of "Both Sides Now" and a very sweetly sung "Blue." Although by no means essential compared to her other work, the performances on MILES OF AISLES do have a certain offhandedness that may be of interest to those who think Mitchell often takes herself too seriously. Joni Mitchell Miles Of Aisles Songs Miles Of Aisles Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) L IVE CLASSIC. A great live album that will reward your listening hours for years to come. A hi-res system will reveal two distinct acoustic realms, so maybe it is cherry-picked from two nights. Anyone not convinced of Jonis' vocal power need only to listen to RAINY NIGHT HOUSE, the dynamic range is awesome. Submitted by David Martin (Mt Martha, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Better than Blue This album/CD is much better than the public's beloved "Blue" (just click on #15 Carey on this and compare it to "Blue"). My favorite album/CD by Joni, and the back-up band of Tom Scott and the LA Express are fantastic and compliment Joni's incomparable jazzy vocals. Buy this one! All you need of the early years! Must be close to the best sound quality of any live album from the seventies or almost any era and has almost every great song from the first five or six years of her career. The LA Express back her up and, although their work as a group was pretty lame, this work with Joni must rank as some of the best they've done. Robben Ford on guitar, John Guerin on drums, Max Bennett on bass and Tom Scott on sax are all fantastic on this outing. Scott, for instance, is able to perfectly match his sound to Joni's voice and there are times when you don't know which is which. They do an excellent Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young type version of "Woodstock" which rocks out! This must have been an excellent concert to have been at because you can feel the warmth from both performers and audience. Submitted by richard.langereis (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Miles Of Aisles
$12.95 With 2006's RUDEBOX Robbie Williams moved from adult-alternative pop-rock to unabashed dance-pop. It was a welcome change of pace, given the lackluster nature of the album's predecessors. Part bouncy club set and part new wave rave-up, RUDEBOX finds Williams sounding freer and more fun than he has in a long time. The synthy, hip-hop robo-groove of the title track that opens the album wastes no time getting the party started. One of the album's pleasant surprises, however, is its sense of variety. For starters, Williams chooses an intriguing array of covers, ranging as far afield as Manu Chao, the Human League, and My Robot Friend. "Kiss Me" is 1980s-flavored dance music with a dash of disco, whereas "The 90s" is a dreamy downtempo tune that has Williams recounting his days in the boy band Take That. RUDEBOX missteps a time or two, but overall it is a breath of fresh air in the artist's discography. The careers of most music celebrities are like passenger ships, able to steam along nearly indefinitely without the least chance of modifying course. With his work of the 21st century, Robbie Williams appeared to have set himself on a course that was guaranteed to keep him working for decades, remaining important to thousands of fans, but never varying from the ...
