The most bluesy and visceral of Waits' mid-period albums, HEARTATTACK encapsulates the jazzy piano ballads ("Ruby's Arms"), beatnik imagery ("Mr. Siegal") and seedy, blues-inflected tales from America's underbelly that he perfected in his first decade of recording. This is an album of extremes, as Waits is unabashedly (and convincingly) sentimental on "On The Nickel" and "Jersey Girl" (later covered by Springsteen) and unflinchingly hard-boiled on the title track and the hustler's anthem "'Til the Money Runs Out." The concise, compact arrangements (he had never grooved so fiercely) foreshadowed the rhythmic invention to come in Waits' later work.

Heartattack And Vine album
$6.55 FRANKS WILD YEARS by Kathleen Brennan and Tom Waits had its theatrical debut with the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago, Illinois on June 22, 1986.
Ostensibly a "concept" piece about the strange adventures of a ne'er-do-well named Frank, FRANK'S WILD YEARS is an album full of masterfully written songs and brilliant arrangements, whether one follows the conceptual thread or not. This final album in the loose trilogy that began with SWORDFISHTROMBONES expands upon the advances of its predecessors both in terms of hazy, dreamlike imagery and eclectic, exotic instrumentation.
Waits is nothing if not theatrical, and he plays a wide range of characters here. On ...

Heartattack And Vine CD music
$6.49 Though Tom Waits had spent most of the '70s establishing himself as one of America's most distinctive singer-songwriters, SWORDFISHTROMBONES found him reinventing himself and creating one of the most original sounds in popular music. Leaving behind his Kerouac-influenced lyrics and lounge-lizard piano-bar stylings for an unprecedented eclecticism that merged Brecht-Weill artsong, Captain Beefheart-style avant blues, Harry Partch-inspired junkyard percussion, along ...

| | Tom Waits Small Change CD (1976)
Heartattack And Vine songs
$8.65 Unquestionably the definitive recording of Waits' early period, SMALL CHANGE brings his beatnik/grifter/gruff, poetic piano man persona into sharp, defining focus. Waits' blues/jazz/'40s pop amalgam is at its most cohesive here, as he's backed by three West Coast jazz vets and an occasional ...

| | Jeff Buckley Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk CDs (1998)
Heartattack And Vine music CDs
$15.95 SKETCHES FOR MY SWEETHEART THE DRUNK is a posthumous release of the material Jeff Buckley was working on before his death in 1997. Disc One includes the studio sessions for what would have been his second album, produced by Tom Verlaine. Disc Two includes Buckley's 4-track home recordings of works-in-progress, plus a live recording from the studio of WFMU.
The CD-Extra version of SKETCHES FOR MY SWEETHEART THE DRUNK contains all the tracks on the original album along with a collage of photos, artwork, and lyrical excerpts and clippings from Jeff's notebooks.
"Everybody Here Wants You" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
We'll never know for sure what artistic heights Jeff Buckley might have gone on to reach, since he was taken from us so obscenely early, with only time enough to complete one album and begin work on a second. With the help of SKETCHES, though, we can make some educated guesses. This double-disc, lovingly assembled by Buckley's friends, colleagues and family, gathers together both his studio efforts and home 4-track demos for the album he was trying to complete up until his tragic drowning.
The studio sessions, produced by Tom Verlaine, find Buckley downplaying his phenomenal vocal abilities somewhat, in favor of focusing on the songs, from the Zeppelinisms of "The Sky Is A Landfill" to the undoubtedly Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-influenced "New Year's ...
| | Steely Dan Countdown To Ecstasy CD (1973) Remastered
Heartattack And Vine songs
$6.49 Riding high on the success of their debut CAN'T BUY A THRILL, Steely Dan put together what was, on the surface, their most commercial and straightforward album. "Bodhisattva," for example, which opens the album, works a driving, jump-blues groove that seems at odds with the band's laid-back, ...
