Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level.
Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of the masterful Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass weave their way seductively through Joni's melancholy interpretation of "Sweet Sucker Dance." The high point of the album, however, is the funky "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" which benefits from Pastorius' gurgling bass groove and dynamic horn arrangement. The album finale is the beautiful ballad "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," on which Mitchell delivers one of the most heartfelt and stunning vocal performances of her career. To complete the picture, snippets of conversations with Mingus are inserted between tracks to draw the album into a cohesive whole.

Mingus
$6.39 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell never really considered herself a folkie. While adding jazz textures to her literate lyrics in the mid-'70s may have confused her fans and infuriated jazz purists, to her it was as natural as rain. On DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER, she collaborated with the cream of the '70s jazz crop including Wayne Shorter, Don Alias, Airto, Larry Carlton and a young bassist by the name of Jaco Pastorius.
The sound on DON JUAN is lean, with a stripped-down band largely relying on bass and percussion to back up Mitchell's voice and acoustic guitar. Pastorius in particular proves himself an able and sensitive accompanist, flexing his considerable chops, but also laying low and letting his singular tone do all the work when necessary. ...
| | Joni Mitchell Court And Spark CD (1974)
Mingus
$9.09 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
COURT AND SPARK completed Joni Mitchell's transition from folk-singer to sophisticated rock auteur. In addition to her meticulously crafted melodies and evocative, image-rich lyrics, the songs here are breezy and immediately appealing. This is in part due to Tom Scott's L.A. Express, a sinuous jazz-based combo, but also to Mitchell's knack for pop hooks, which abound on COURT AND SPARK. The album's accessibility made it Mitchell's most commercially successful, yet the personal intensity and insight of her songwriting never wavers.
"Help Me" was a hit single, as was "Free Man in Paris," an expansive pop frolic that is reputedly a dig at industry mogul David Geffen. Mitchell returns to the terrain of piano balladry on "The Same Situation" and "Down to You"; yet even on these, as on the excellent social satire "People's Parties," one can hear the influence of jazz on her vocal phrasing and intonations. The rock-&-roll romp "Raised on Robbery" and the bluesy, comic swing of "Twisted" mix ...

| | Joni Mitchell For The Roses CD (1972)
Mingus
$9.19 Between the stark, confessional singer-songwriter format of BLUE and the artful, streamlined jazz-pop of COURT AND SPARK, Joni Mitchell released this excellent transitional album. Located firmly between these stylistic poles, FOR THE ROSES looks to Mitchell's folky beginnings with wistful, piano-driven ballads like "Banquet" and the acoustic guitar lilt of the title track. At the same time cuts like "Cold Blue Steel and Straight Fire" push toward the unconventional melodies and rhythms--heavily influenced by jazz--that she would explore more fully on albums like HEJIRA.
"Electricity" and "Let the Wind Carry Me" blend singer-songwriter styles with jazzy flourishes (as on the saxophone accompaniment and swooping wordless vocals on the latter), while ...

$12.19 Collectables' History of Rock: The 60s, Pt. 2 is a random but wonderful 20-track collection of pop and rock gems. It touches on doo wop (the Jive Five's "What Time Is It?," the Paradons' "Diamonds and Pearls"), garage rock (the Music Explosion's "Little Bit of Soul," the Five Americans' "Western Union Man"), bubblegum (the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar"), soul (Lee Dorsey's "Ya Ya," Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is"), girl group (the Shangri-Las' "Give Him a Great Big Kiss," the Chiffons' "One Fine Day"), AM pop (the Brooklyn Bridge's "The Worst That Could Happen"), and just plain great songs (the Beau Brummels' "Laugh, Laugh," the Soul Survivors' "Expressway to Your Heart," the Turtles' "Happy Together"). ...
