(3 Customer Reviews)
On their second album, the Cars take a small step to the left. While remaining a solidly mainstream new wave band (as they would throughout their career), the group gets a bit artier on CANDY-O, with impressive results. Like many of their peers, the band began to accentuate the angular, electronic/futuristic aspect of their sound, exploiting its inorganic quality for maximum irony and detachment.
On "Got a Lot on My Head" and "Double Life," Ric Ocasek seems ever more the alienated geek content to crack wise in a world he made from a do-it-yourself science kit. Ben Orr lends a slightly more emotive (but no less ominous) feel to the glossy, metallic surface of the title tune and the infectious "Let's Go." Ocasek's hipness quotient is displayed in the unconventional "Shoo Be Doo," a short, strange homage to his heroes/pals Suicide.

Candy-O album

Ric Ocasek's songs were influenced by the Velvet Underground and the punk rock movement, but had a slick pop/rock sheen which proved very successful. After a demo version of "Just What I Needed" became a listener favorite on WBCN in Boston (the bands' homebase), they were pursued by record companies. THE CARS was recorded in 2 weeks in London, England.
This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. The giveaway ...

Candy-O songs
$22.65 Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California).
THE WALL was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. By now, the bassist had firm control of the group's direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, THE WALL was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals--nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.
The story revolves around ...

| | Bobby Vee Sings Your Favorites/Bobby Vee CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Candy-O music CDs
$18.69 Bobby Vee's debut album was, with the exception of the surprise hit "Devil or Angel" (originally a B-side that got flipped by one DJ and gave Vee the hit that resulted in the renewal of his contract and the recording of this LP), a collection of covers selected by his producer, Snuff Garrett. It's a classic example of the teen pop that pretty much supplanted rock & roll at the very tail end of the 1960s, with the Johnny Mann Singers a little too much in evidence along with a string section (with a band mostly borrowed from Little Richard hanging back), and the arrangements a little too close to the originals. What makes it worth hearing as slightly more than a curio of its period is Vee's singing, which is amazingly good on material to which he cannot always have resonated personally. It was likely during the recording of this album that Garrett realized just how professional the young artist was, as Vee gave 100 percent whether he was covering Sam Cooke or the McGuire Sisters (albeit covering their rendition of the Harvey Fuqua-authored "Sincerely," so it was sort of cool). Superficially, this album is as tame as anything of its era, apart from "Devil or Angel," but as a showcase for Vee's most mature sound, and his range beyond rock & roll, it's worth hearing as an appendix to his ...
