PANORAMA takes the forward-looking electronic soundscapes of CANDY-O and fashions them into driving, catchy pop tunes. Its both the most urgent and the most angular of the Cars' recordings, as the band's self-consciousness modernism works overtime to achieve maximum accessibility. If that sounds like a compromise, think again; "Misfit Kid" and "You Wear Those Eyes" are a couple of the most trenchant compositions in the band's career, and the unrelenting power of the hooks in "Touch and Go" and "Up and Down" blows right by any superficial notions of "selling out" (as if the Cars were ever anything other than a perfect pop conglomerate to begin with).

Panorama Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews the cars - panorama (hdcd remaster) the hdcd remaster is a definite improvement in sound quality over the original transfer version i bought about 7 years ago. this is a good album for the techno-rock sound. the songs are fairly short and change pace. this keeps the music moving and interesting. a must for cars fans. Highly original! This is the most unique, creative Cars album ever! and certainly one of their best!
Panorama avoids the typical bublegum top twenty formular of many other albums. It is so refreshing to listen to compared to the worn out, overplayed first two albums. It is a great example of the early 80's sound that I remember well, and still sounds superb to this day! Submitted by Paul (realwey444@aol.com) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Panorama I was taken aback somewhat when I first heard this. After the stark brilliance of their 1st two albums I expected the same hooky upbeat sardonic genius. The dark edgier tunes that unfolded were initially hard to embrace. But after repeat listenings I found the same quality songcraft reflecting a darker more cynical side which I came to love as another facet of this iconic group. The Cars were at the forefront of the New Wave and are among the most influential rock bands of the age. Cars broken windsheild.. That was the title of a 1980's review of this piece of trash.. and is quite adept at expressing what it is... pure
trash.. a damned shame that a band could produce two classic albums, and then turn around and do a complete 180.. obviopusly written in restrooms and on the tour bus as they partied... high on Coke and alcohol... and it shows... absolute rubbish.. Art Rock This is the darker of their records, alongside the first, self-titled release. Running to You, You Wear Those Eyes, and Down Boys are all killer, and Touch and Go is way overlooked as a great song. Misfit Kid describes the awkward teenage experience better than any other Cars Song. Lots of rare guitar tones and synth sounds; their most arty release. Ric Ocasek's songs were influenced by the Velvet Underground and the punk rock movement, but had a slick pop/rock sheen which proved very successful. After a demo version of "Just What I Needed" became a listener favorite on WBCN in Boston (the bands' homebase), they were pursued by record companies. THE CARS was recorded in 2 weeks in London, England.
This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. The giveaway was the irresistible harmony-ridden hooks in just about every one of his songs. Listen again to "You're All I've Got Tonight," "Just What I Needed" or "My Best Friend's Girl" and be thrilled. Lots of chunka chunka guitar and Mamas And Papas harmonies, and rarely a dull moment. They managed only six albums in 20 years, but they never bettered this.
In the late '70s and early '80s, the Cars were the commercially acceptable face of American new wave. ...

$6.19 It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided to continue with a new vocalist and keyboardist. It was even more surprising when the new members turned out to be Trevor Horn (later a famed pop producer) and Geoff Downes (who would soon depart with Steve Howe for Asia). And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA turned out to be a great one.
While Horn's voice is in the same general range as Anderson's, he tends to blend more with the vocals of Howe and Squire for a distinctive three-part harmony sound. Similarly, the individual instrumental statements of Howe and Downes avoid grandstanding in favor of the group dynamic. Consequently, DRAMA is one of Yes' most direct, concise offerings, full of relatively short songs that still maintain all the Yes hallmarks. Anderson diehards should leave their inhibitions at the door.
For this one album, ex-Buggles Geoffrey Downes and Trevor Horn were drafted in to replace Jon Anderson and Rick ...

Panorama album
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more ...
