Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, banjo); Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar, piano); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass instrument); Don Henley (vocals, drums); Don Felder (electric guitar). The Eagles began recording their third album in England with producer Glyn Johns, as they had their first two albums, but abandoned the sessions after completing two acceptable tracks. Johns, it is said, tended to emphasize the group's country elements and its harmonies, while the band, in particular Glenn Frey and Don Henley, wanted to take more of a hard rock direction. They reconvened with a new producer, Bill Szymczyk, who had produced artists like B.B. King and, more significantly, Joe Walsh. But the resulting album is not an outright rock effort by any means. Certainly, Frey and Henley got what they wanted with "Already Gone," the lead-off track, which introduces new bandmember Don Felder as one part of the twin guitar solo that recalls the Allman Brothers Band; "James Dean," a rock & roll song on the order of "Your Mama Don't Dance," and "Good Day in Hell," which is strongly reminiscent of Joe Walsh songs like "Rocky Mountain Way." But the album also features the usual mixture of styles typical of an Eagles album. For example, "Midnight Flyer," sung by Randy Meisner, is modern bluegrass; "My Man" is Bernie Leadon's country-rock tribute to the recently deceased Gram Parsons; and "Ol' 55" is one of the group's well-done covers of a tune by a singer/songwriter labelmate, in this case Tom Waits. The title track, meanwhile, points the band in a new R&B direction that was later pursued more fully. Like most successful groups, the Eagles combined many different elements, and their third album, which looked back to their earlier work and anticipated their later work, was a transitional effort that combined even more styles than most of their records did. ~ William Ruhlmann ON THE BORDER marked a point of transition for the Eagles, a halfway point between their original country-rock sound and the slick pop-rock they would later embrace. The arrival of guitarist Don Felder helped eventuate this shift, even as founding member/multi-instrumentalist Bernie Leadon found himself increasingly alienated by the move away from his rootsier orientation. "Midnight Flyer," the smash hit "Already Gone," and Leadon's "My Man," an elegy to Eagles influence Gram Parsons, are the remaining traces of the band's old sound. The title track finds the band flirting with the disco-funk sound they would pursue further on their subsequent album ONE OF THESE NIGHTS. "The Best of My Love" is the kind of flawlessly constructed '70s radio staple for which the term soft-rock was invented. The band's cover version of the Tom Waits ballad "Ol' 55" was perhaps the furthest from its origins any Waits composition would get until Rod Stewart took on "Downtown Train" many years later. In all, ON THE BORDER effectively represents the eclectic but expertly blended mix of styles that pushed the Eagles to the top of the '70s rock heap. Eagles On The Border Songs On The Border Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Worth crossing the border for! The Eagles' third disc shows them to be in fine form. It gets off to a rousing start with the squealing guitars of "Already Gone." A sensual feel takes over in "You Never Cry Like a Lover," with a great lead vocal by Don Henley. Speaking of great lead vocals, "Midnight Flyer" features bassist Randy Meisner (who made his voice sound just like a train whistle!) as well as the fancy banjo pickin' of Bernie Leadon. He's responsible for the heartfelt tribute to the late Gram Parsons, "My Man," a slow country tune featuring his talents on the pedal steel. "On the Border" has a genuine r&b funk feel, and all this is just on the first half of the disc! "James Dean" rocks hard, in the vein of the first track. Then comes the gorgeous interpretation of Tom Waits' "Ol' 55," with its gently weeping pedal steel guitar. The talents of Randy Meisner on lead vocals and Glenn Frey on slide guitar are prominent on "Is It True." "Good Day in Hell" has the absolutely wicked slide of the then-newest Eagle, Don Felder. Finally, the set is completed with the Eagles' first number one song, a country ballad called "The Best of My Love." What are you waiting for? Cross the border and add this one to your collection today! Submitted by K.C. (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Great rock This is my favorite eagles album. It has a heavier rock beat then the earlier albums. Don Felder really was a good addition to the band. James Dean and Good Day in Hell are the best song on it. The only song that good have been spruced up a bit was Ol 55. Submitted by a reviewer (detroit mi) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ON THE BORDER THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS CD IS YOU DON'T HAVE TO FLIP IT OVER, AND IT PLAYS AND FLOWS GREAT. EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. IF YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO EAGLES DON'T LISTEN TO THAT ONE SONG, PUT IT IN AND LISTEN TO EVERY ONE OF THE TRACKS.THE GOOD THING ABOUT THE ALBUMS WAS YOU HAD A LYRIC SHEET AND THESE GUYS AND THEIR FRIENDS WRITE SOME VERY GOOD STUFF. Actually quite good! Somehow i feel this is an overlooked gem. It is actually quite good. A lot of good songs you wont find on any of the greatest hits or collections. The only song that made it to airplay is the albums worst song "the best of my love". It is not the best eaglesrecord but it is absolutely worth owning. This and "DESPERADO" are the EAGLES worst efforts This album, to tell the truth is pretty weak. When you get past "JAMES DEAN" and "ALREADY GONE", you don't have much of an album!!! "BEST OF MY LOVE" is one of their few pieces of trash, if you ask me!!!!!! It all come's down to personal taste, some may really like this album. I think you would do better to buy "ONE OF THESE NIGHTS", or "HOTEL CALIFORNIA". Submitted by Mark (Wichita,KS,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

$13.15 Organic, upfront and true energy delivered with a quirky voice and very soothing, fresh guitar playing. James is a new face exploding onto the music scene. The singer-songwriter has been touching people through his music from a young age. His music is a diverse blend of acoustic-rock guitar playing, a 'power ballad' voice and original, poetic song writing. This combined with his edge and conviction has emerged a bright light on the scene attracting more and more interest. Live Performance ReviewsSteve Lamacq's 'Radio One - One Music':Hurry, get those lighters in the air! Fans of the soft rock ballad may well find that James' music sets their world on fire.James makes no bones when it comes to describing his music. "I'd describe it as soft rock ballads with balls".
