Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman (May 1993, Steve's Retro-Mobile).
Jackson Browne's early career was inextricably linked to the singer-songwriter movement of the 70s, and LATE FOR THE SKY has proven to be one of the era's strongest and most enduring releases. Browne's reflective songwriting style attained a new level of maturity on songs such as "Fountain Of Sorrow" and "For A Dancer," the latter a strikingly literate meditation on death.
The high points on LATE FOR THE SKY are the title track and "Before the Deluge," two brooding songs of personal and social apocalypse that bookend the album and seem to reflect the disillusionment and weather-beaten mood of the counter-cultural generation in the early '70s. The balance between Browne's gentle, emotive voice and the tasteful arrangements perfectly matches the incisive quality of the songwriting, making LATE FOR THE SKY one of Browne's strongest, and most consistent albums.

Late For The Sky album
$6.29 Jackson Browne was one of the leading singer/songwriters of the '70s, and THE PRETENDER, his fourth album, under the supervision of Bruce Springsteen's producer, Jon Landau, remains his definitive '70s record. Part of the cadre of L.A. musicians that included the Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt, Browne stood out as the spokesman for baby boomer angst. This low-key rocker sings in a plaintive tone, concentrating more on lyrics than melody. But his music is complicated and off the beaten-path of standard folk-rock songwriting, sometimes sounding like the soulful Van Morrison, especially on "Your Bright Baby Blues."

Late For The Sky CD music
$5.99 Also available with JACKSON BROWNE (SATURATE BEFORE USING) on 1 cassette.
An audacious concept album about life on the road, this is a mix of in concert performances and informal sessions taped in various hotel rooms (see "Shaky Town," although it's hard to believe that Browne, by then a major star, was actually staying at a Holiday Inn). It's very '70s--the overall aura of cocaine-fueled decadence is almost palpable--but it works far better than you'd expect, and the songs are consistently memorable, even if Browne didn't write them all.
High points include a stunning half hotel/half concert version of Danny O'Keefe's "The Road," still the best song ever written about the life of a travelling musician, and ...

Late For The Sky music CDs
$8.75 The first Jackson Browne album presents a thoughtful, literate artist informed by the street-poet-with-guitar sound of Bob Dylan. Browne takes that approach and refines it with a more formal use of language and a more carefully crafted ...
| | Jackson Browne For Everyman CD (1973)
Late For The Sky songs
$8.69 Browne's second album is state of the art early '70s L.A. ruminative singer/songwriter stuff, but in retrospect it's nowhere near as slick or mellow as the listener might remember. In fact, the combination of Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pealing steel and David Lindley's smudgy psychedelic lead guitar on songs like "Take It Easy" (all but unrecognizable from the Eagles' pop version) and "Our Lady of the Well" create a sound that eerily anticipates the '90s alt ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Late For The Sky album
$8.79 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," ...

| | Paul Manousos For Better Or Worse CD (2006)
Late For The Sky CD music
$10.55 Singer/songwriter Paul Manousos starts off running with a slow-building but very fine "Another Day in the Life" that is teeming with Kinks-like feel-good pop. But it's the softer, melancholic tracks on For Better or Worse where he truly shines, bringing to mind Mick Jagger circa "Waiting on a Friend" or "Beast of Burden" with the surprisingly strong, Southern-tinged ballad "Beautiful Girl." From there, Manousos returns with a safe pop tune that ...
