From the see-through skirt on the cover photo of 1971's ANTICIPATION onwards, Carly Simon has never minded showing off her body. However, the cover shot for 1975's PLAYING POSSUM--a photo to which the only possible response is "yowza"--is so provocative that in many folks' minds, it's eclipsed the album itself. This seems to have happened even to Simon--her three-disc career compilation CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE includes nothing from this hit album.
Simon's last album to be produced by mid-'70s hitmaker Richard Perry, PLAYING POSSUM does show why she chose to go into a new, more sonically adventurous direction with her next album, ANOTHER PASSENGER. It's not that PLAYING POSSUM is dull--the single "Attitude Dancing" is a minor gem, slight but awfully fun, as is "Are You Ticklish?"--just that Simon occasionally sounds as if she feels somewhat hemmed-in by Perry's arrangements. Regardless, this is terrific, underrated '70s pop.

Playing Possum album
$14.49 Johnny Nash's embrace of reggae had revitalized his career as well as giving the Jamaican sound a new audience in the United States, but that clearly wasn't all he was interested in, and Nash's 1975 album Tears on My Pillow kicks off with "Why Did You Do It," a fine example of polished Philly soul with an understated disco groove. Bunny Sigler produced the track, along with two other numbers on Tears on My Pillow. Nash's clear but emphatic vocals mesh beautifully with the arrangements, and it's intriguing to imagine what Nash could have done with an entire album recorded with the legendary Sigma Sound crew. Much of the rest of the set was recorded in London and Kingston, with Nash moving back and forth between light but flavorful reggae numbers (including three songs written by Bob Marley) and solid traditional soul, with the title song (a number one hit in the U.K.) offering a little bit of both. The unifying element on this album is Johnny Nash's voice, and the man rarely gets his due as one of the most gifted singers of his era. Nash's approach was simple and straightforward, but he also knew how to deliver a potent emotional performance without showboating; his solid delivery on an eclectic set of material confirms his gift with a song. (He also had a knack for surrounding himself with talent -- these sessions included guest appearances by Bobby Womack, Herbie Hancock, and Hugh Masekela.) Tears on My Pillow was hardly Nash's best or most interesting album, but there's more than enough here to appeal to fans of classic reggae and soul, and it's fine stuff from an underappreciated artist. ~ Mark Deming
The mass appeal of Nash is summed up very well by Charlie Gillett in the Sound Of The City where he wrote "the combination of his flawless vocal, a catchy pop song and the immaculate rhythm track overcame radio resistance to reggae. Nash's reggae rhythms supply the pulse, the horns, keyboards and Nash's voice carry his sound far beyond the audience which would just listen to a catchy dance number." All is present on this original LP from Nash in 1975 which spawned the title tracks as ...

Playing Possum CD music
$13.75 CLEARLIGHT SYMPHONY 1974 The Clearlight symphony is the first example of Cyrille Verdeaux as a composer. Richard Branson signed Clearlight, along with Tangerine Dream, Gong , Klaus Schulze, etc. as the first wave of bands on the newly formed Virgin records, hot on the heels of Mike Oldfield's worldwide success with Tubular Bells. Led by the classically trained master keyboardist, Cyrille Verdeaux chose to work with additional artists to flesh out his musical visions including guitarist Christian Boule and Gilbert Artman on drums. The sound is rich, full and colorful, truly symphonic, with psychedelic guitar flare-ups. Recorded in 1973, it continues to sound timeless with its melodic blend of classical, rock and free jazz. Guitarist Steve Hillage, Saxophonist Didier Malherbe and Synthesist Tim Blake were borrowed from Gong to produce a classic progressive symphonic work present on the first side of the LP, clocking ...
