Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic guitar, Moog, piano); James Taylor (guitar, background vocals); Jeff Baxter (guitar); Chuck Findley (flugelhorn); Victor Feldman (electric piano, congas, vibraphone); Max Bennett, Wilton Felder (bass); John Guerin (drums, Moog). All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell evolved from the smooth jazz-pop of Court and Spark to the radical Hissing of Summer Lawns, an adventurous work that remains among her most difficult records. After opening with the graceful "In France They Kiss on Main Street," the album veers sharply into "The Jungle Line," an odd, Moog-driven piece backed by the rhythms of the warrior drums of Burundi -- a move into multiculturalism that beat the likes of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and Sting to the punch by a decade. While not as prescient, songs like "Edith and the Kingpin" and "Harry's House -- Centerpiece" are no less complex or idiosyncratic, employing minor-key melodies and richly detailed lyrics to arrive at a strange and beautiful fusion of jazz and shimmering avant pop. ~ Jason Ankeny A continuing move towards jazz was the most striking element of this record when first released. Larry Carlton and Robben Ford became two names to bandy around and appear cool. Indeed, their guitar playing throughout is superlative. The real strength, however, is the way in which Mitchell reached new plateaux with graceful ease. The remarkable "The Jungle Line" features the drums of Barundi and must be played loud to fully appreciate its avant garde quality. The opening line, "Rousseau walk on trumpet paths," has the listener reaching for the Dictionary Of Art. As understated and lyrically deep as anything she has recorded, it is a stunning piece of work.

Joni Mitchell Hissing Of Summer Lawns Songs Hissing Of Summer Lawns Music Hissing Of Summer Lawns Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Still a fantastic musical experience What can you say? Joni Mitchell is in a class of her own. There's that special sound that identifies her old records and "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" is no exception to that rule. As an artist, songwriter and performer she has inspired a lot of female singers, but nobody sings like Joni Mitchell. What a marvellous voice she possesses - it's like an instrument! the name says it all Joni Mitchell is at her best with this album. She blends words and music better than most people I've heard. Old is good. Submitted by a reviewer (Knoxville, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Instantly Likeable! An excellent all round album, one I instantly liked after hearing it for the first time.
Opening with the beautiful 'In France They Kiss On Main Street', this album just flows along gently. The second track 'The Jungle Line' is slightly different from the pattern of the rest of the album, but still catchy. All other tracks are memorable with Joni's
beautiful voice shining through.
This was my first Joni album but I have added a lot more since buying this.Definitely one to savour! Submitted by Michael (Birr,Offaly,Ireland.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Unmissable Superb album. You must listen to 'Jungle Line', the most incisive allegory about the human condition. You may not like the song at first, but I guarantee after at most 10 listens it will have you hypnotised. And that is before you realise how piercing ALL the lyrics are.
If you ever feel down at yourself, if you are caught between your instinctual nature and higher self, listen to this song. Submitted by fioluk (Leicester, United Kingdom) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Hissing Of Summer Lawns
$34.15 Includes liner notes by Noel Hawks. BOB MARLEY & FRIENDS is a three-CD box set that features a variety of artists who worked with Bob Marley or influenced his career. Several of the 50 tracks on this collection appear on CD for the first time. Listeners should be aware that the title on this three-disc box set from Trojan Records really ought to be Bob Marley's Friends rather than Bob Marley & Friends, since it consists of tracks by backup singers, ex-Wailers, and former producers who worked with Marley, and virtually nothing from Marley himself. That doesn't make this a bad collection, just a misleading one. There is plenty to like here, including a trio of organ instrumentals from Aston Barrett ("Ten Thousand Tons of Dollar Bills," "Deep River," "Sly Mongoose"), a couple of familiar Peter Tosh songs ("Maga Dog," "Arise Blackman"), ...
