Joni Mitchell's Hejira is the last in an astonishingly long run of top-notch studio albums dating back to her debut. Some vestiges of her old style remain here; "Song for Sharon" utilizes the static, pithy vocal harmonies from Ladies of the Canyon's "Woodstock," "Refuge of the Roads" features woodwind touches reminiscent of those in "Barangrill" from For the Roses, and "Coyote" is a fast guitar-strummed number that has precedents as far back as Clouds' "Chelsea Morning." But by and large, this release is the most overtly jazz-oriented of her career up to this point -- hip and cool, but never smug or icy. "Blue Motel Room" in particular is a prototypic slow jazz-club combo number, appropriately smooth, smoky, and languorous. "Coyote," "Black Crow," and the title track are by contrast energetically restless fast-tempo selections. The rest of the songs here cleverly explore variants on mid- to slow-tempo approaches. None of these cuts are traditionally tuneful in the manner of Mitchell's older folk efforts; the effect here is one of subtle rolls and ridges on a green meadow rather than the outgoing beauty of a flower garden. Mitchell's verses, many concerned with character portraits, are among the most polished of her career; the most striking of these studies are that of the decrepit Delta crooner of "Furry Sings the Blues" and the ambivalent speaker of "Song to Sharon," who has difficulty choosing between commitment and freedom. Arrangements are sparse, yet surprisingly varied, the most striking of which is the kaleidoscopically pointillistic one used on "Amelia." Performances are excellent, with special kudos reserved for Jaco Pastorius' melodic bass playing on "Refuge of the Roads" and the title cut. This excellent album is a rewarding listen. ~ David Cleary
Joni Mitchell draws freely on her heroes and influences, and in her turn inspires and informs the work of countless others; thus are the genes of our musical heritage passed on to new generations. The love of jazz glimpsed in COURT AND SPARK and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is wanton in HEJIRA. The arrangements are loose and the melodies seductively free-flowing. The lyrics, too, have broken free of rigid verse and rhyme structures and tend towards prose poetry. The cloak of introspection that weighs down on much of her work is lighter here; though far from mainstream. The chiming flanged guitar throughout, is inspired.

5 stars BEYOND FIVE STARS.
Joni gets a broken heart and drives off to find herself, and perhaps America. Letters home to Sharon, thoughts on others who just take off, all in asides the listener can eavesdrop on. The apex of the confessional songwriter form. It does not get any better, tho many of Jonis' other albums come close. Every sentient being should have this as a cornerstone of their collection.

5 stars that high lonesome roadway sound
Even though Joni Mitchell is both a icon and an iconoclast, this album has been overlooked and deserves a wider audience. Minor chords and ennui abound. Beautifully sung, superlative material. When everything falls apart and you toss off whatever harness that you bear, this is your soundtrack. "Hejira" contains two of her all-time classics, "Coyote" and "Blue Motel Room". I've found that albums with lyrics sometimes don't make good traveling companions. This is the exception.

5 stars timeless
This work is indeed a masterpiece, one of the finest albums ever made. It is still my favorite Joni Mitchell album, after hearing all of them over the last 25+ years, when I first heard Hejira. Joni Mitchell sees straight through you - it's haunting. If I could only have one CD, this would be it.

5 stars pure joy
Never have I heard an album as perfect as this one. Every song is a journey of discovery, heart, beauty and creativity. Both lyrics and music do not follow any rules or logic, but rather flowing in a space so free and inspiring. This just might be the best album ever made.

Magic Position
Patrick Wolf Magic Position CD  (2007) (Import) Import; Japan

Hejira
CD $13.15
On his 2007 major-label debut, THE MAGIC POSITION, Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf largely abandons his brooding Nick Cave-like demeanor (expertly displayed on '05's acclaimed WIND IN THE WIRES), opting instead to embrace the aesthetic of a brightly bedecked, life-loving dandy. What hasn't changed in this POSITION is Wolf's wildly inventive approach, which fully showcases the young performer's expressive croon and multi-instrumental skills on tracks ranging from the swooning, New Romantic-influenced "Bluebells" to the pulsing, beat-driven "Accident and Emergency" to the delicate, jazzy "Enchanted." As unpredictable and fascinating as Wolf himself, THE MAGIC POSITION demands attention for its kaleidoscopic vision and bold, dynamic sound.
Brooding, multi-talented indie prince Patrick Wolf lets a little sunshine in on his third full-length album, the undeniably catchy but highly unstable The Magic Position. Released in 2005, Wind in the Wires struck a nice balance between eerie British folk-inspired imagery/instrumentation and general home-recorded electronic cacophony. It was a deeply personal, slightly guarded, and occasionally brutal slice of brain tissue that promised great things from the young singer/violinist. That skull is open to the public on The Magic Position, and while the results can be a little spotty, the exhibit itself is impossible to ignore. Wolf is blissfully unafraid of pomp and circumstance, an observation lent weight by ...
